As I guess we Kiwis will be the first to see the sun. I guess its my job to be the first to wish you all all the best for the new year. Im off for a hunt at 4am just to get in first.

Got up n left house at 03:30 and picked up buddy at 4. Got to hunting area before 05:00 to beat the sunrise. No easy deer on lookout but spooked 2 in thick bush at 25-30yds never got a glimpse. Carried on and spotted BRIGHT orange/browny/red thing 50yrds away. Up came scope ? ? ? Onto 9x ??? A block of colour that could be... Wait a minute is that hair?? Got mate to where i was still no good shot/not 100% sure? could see what looked like 3" strip of a deers back head down. Up came head as it took off. Yip a velvet stag no chance of a shot. Better to be safe than sorry. Long walk down hill chuckling. Decided to check out grassy creek track. Came around cnr to see wee deer bolt. Either very small red or a fallow. Drink from creek laughing at our luck then retrace steps to car chatting away only to see 2 MORE reds jump up n take off from area 5-600mtrs from car on our track in. 6 animals close encountered and barrel still clean n tape over muzzle! Great start to year... Very Happy

went back up on saturday didnt see a thing (not surprising being midday and about 30 degrees) but poked some bits of marker on the trail to make it easier to find our way up in the dark next time.
