I'm not getting anything for this but a Kiwi Hunter/inventor has come up with a new safety device. Its a small electronic beast. About the size of a packet of cigarettes. If you are carrying one and another hunter is also carrying one both will sound off if you get within 100 meters of each other. Frickn brilliant. Might stop a few of people getting shot.
International patents apply.

Implementing it will be the difficult thing to do. If people aren't required to use them, they will likely not buy them. States could mandate they be used on public land. Might be discouraging though to be in your tree stand and have another hunter get close and set off the alarm. When I hunted archery in camo on public land, I just to stay concealed. I was surprised how close others would come to me and not realize I was there.

Great idea..

but, IMHO,

Battery would be a problem, what happen if you run out of battery?
Do you trust it that being silence or still means no one is around?

Also direction and vicinity of the other hunter..
I imagine that due to multiple "false" alarm when you and your mate hunting together,
out of disgust, the unit might be switched off.

Then again, bullets travels way more than 100 meters..

In NZ most of our hunting accidents are caused by non identification of target species and hunters getting too close to each other and shooting blind at noise.
The idea is a small buzz so that you become aware that someone else wearing another unit is inside 100 meters....if it was me I'd call out, tough shit about losing an animal, its not worth the life of another hunter or my own.

During the roar especially there can be literally hundreds of guys in a very close proximity in parts of NZ. Thats one of the reasons I don't hunt during the roar.
Bow hunters are at just as much risk from trigger happy hunters shooting at noise or movement.
Batterys are 2 AAA and I would expect that the life would be reasonable several days at least.
The email address is just that unfortunately. There isn't a website to direct you to. Its just another way of keeping ourselves safe as a community not only as individuals.
Its the same as wearing blaze orange - some people swear by it others poo poo the idea.
Anything to keep me safe out there I'll consider.

Its a band-aid measure at best, do you honestly expect someone dumb enough to shoot at movement or noise without positively identifying the target will actually use one of these?
Expect to see buzzer rage because someone lost an animal due to someone else getting too close.
The only answer is TRAINING when their license is issued and ongoing advertising on the subject.

I agree, if the hunter knows the 4 rules of gun safety by heart, that will be all he/she needs.

I can see this being usefull when hunting with friends. Could also be usefull if you were looking for a lost friend. But I don't want anything that makes noise, how about having it vibrate unitl you hit an "acknowledge" button?

I hunt within 100 meters of each other all the time, I don't need a stinking electronic box to tell me that I'm "close" to other hunters. Laughing

Reinforces not knowing the freaking Rules. Proly get yer hat shot off around a deer stand if you're hunting upland with one- we have overlapping seasons and zones. Deer hunters hate bush kickers.

I see this stuff all the time. It pisses me off. Here's a tip- no one ever shot someone being safe and going by the rules. IF YOU DONT KNOW WHERE THAT BULLET WILL GO FROM START TO FINISH YOU SIMPLY DONT HAVE A SHOT- PERIOD.

SCREW THE GADGETS, LEARN THE RULES OR PUT THE GUN DOWN.

I think the goal is so they know you are that close to you.

This will go away as soon as one malfunctions and some idiot takes a shot at a noise then blames the box for his stupidity.

I actually get into arguments with other shooters. Some don't know they are responsible for every pill they send. They think past the target it's not their problem. Or come up with some idiotic excuse.

It's amazing watching people try and wiggle out of something they know they are liable for. They will look you in the eye and try every angle to skirt the fact that they sent it so they own it. I even get a rash about how "over safety conscious" I am. There's no such thing and yes I am. And if we all go home with no holes? Keep complaining. I'll keep pointing you out to everyone as loud and strongly as I can.

If I send one and it causes damage and death? It's on me. Period. End of story.

Can I say with 100% certainty where it will go? No one can. But if you adopt the mindset and practice the "back stop" rule you'll be suprized how many shots you pass up. I do everytime I hunt. "eh, I'm not sure about this one...there might be a home over there...will I pepper those guys?"

It's this simple, if I can't call it I wont shoot it. If it's too thick to call it I'll push the game 'til I can call it, or, go home without.

There's nothing more important than SAFETY. And that's a rule that should NEVER be broken. No gadget, hat, vest or color can replace The Rules and if said sounding gadget is worn then I guarntee you are thinking about that instead of the Rules...they should sell The Rules instead of this junk.

No offence to and not directed at you, Radar...sorry if I rambled.

I didn't see anyone saying that this device replaces or changes any safety rules. This is simply a way to let others know you are around, and vice versa. I've walked the edge of the property where I was hunting and suddenly realized that there was another hunter 40 yards away, up in a tree stand at the edge of his property. A little warning would have been nice.
