Never having known that CVA was selling centerfire rifles, I was surprised to see these Scout rifles for sale. Made in Spain and sold under the CVA name here in the states, Bergara elsewhere, they are single shot and should compete well with the H+R HandiRifle. I ordered one in stainless steel chambered for the .270 Win. The big attraction for me was the 5.8lb. weight of the rifle and of course the price of just $300. They come with a really nice scope mount that is very similar to the DedNutz mounts I've used on other rifles. I was hoping I'd have it for this weekend, but at last check it was still in the shipping department at Bud's.

Yeah.. that looks great!

New gun & scope for $300..
Goddam, we got ripped off here in Oz..
Something like that would have cost us at least $800

By the look of it, it got metal trigger guard, which is definitely better that H&R plastic crappy trigger guard..

BigBlue, I'm not sure the recoil pad looks big enough. My Tikka .270 weights about 6.25 pounds sans scope and I but a LimbSaver on it to help out my shoulder. Nice compact package.

they are $800 ish over here too. I have read a couple of writeups on then and all good things to say. just watch that you close it firmly as your point of impact will vary if it isnt shut as firmly, dont ask me how that works but that was the one fault/niggle that was brought up. my Bro in laws baikal was finicky in that way when he first got it too.

Sorry if I misled, the scope isn't included for that price just the rifle, but your right that is a metal trigger guard. I have a Nikon 3-9x40 BDC scope to mount on the rifle. The low weight of just 5.8 lbs. kept me from heavier recoiling chamberings. For instance, I can't imagine lighting off a Marlin level 2, 45/70 load in a rifle that light. The .35 Whelan chambering must also be a handful. I was torn between the .270 Win., .243 Win. and the .44 mag. choices. Not sure why, but I've always had a soft spot for single shot rifles, leverguns and S.A. revolvers.

I think a lot of those problems are caused by the barrel latch and the latch shelf it latches to needing to wear in a bit and mate up to each other. H+R HandiRifles experience many problems with that even to the point of having the barrel open up on firing. Many problems were even reported with those rifles caused by excessive lubricant on that shelf. I'm really hoping they learned from the Handi and solved many of H+R's problems in producing this rifle.

the good thing is being a hammer gun you can carry it closed and cock it when needed so trying to shut it quietly shouldnt be an issue.

CVA is knocking it out of the park lately. Makes a nice ML mountain gun too and the Begera barrel is a winner. Very interested in the 44m one. Thanks to you Blue, my wallet may take another hit it can't afford!!! Enjoy it, congrats and post up some paper soon.

Make a nice companion to the .44 Spec! I probably would have ordered the .44 mag. version along with the .270, but I want to see how the .270 is first. Nice thing about these break open actions is that even with a 22" barrel, the overall length is still nice and compact. I think they are only 38" long. The Scout Compact is chambered in .243 with a 20" barrel and overall length of only 35". Blued versions of either are only $256 shipped to your FFL.

I was able to get to the range today with the Scout. I had loaded several different bullet and powder combinations to try and had the Nikon 3-9x40 scope mounted and bore sighted. On the bad side, I had a problem with light primer hits and several cartridges took more than one hit to fire. I'm hoping that was being caused by the hammer spur extension, that came factory mounted, slowing down the hammer. It is screwed into the hammer and was so tight I couldn't remove it at the range. I had to wait until I got home. Reaching the hammer without the spur is no problem so it's removal can only help. I'll be able to tell better on my next range trip. On the good side, I couldn't find a load the rifle didn't like. Almost all loads shot three shot groups at 50 yards measuring .4" and under! I loaded two batches to try on my next trip, one using 150gr. Speer SP bullets and the other 130gr. Hornady SST bullets. Both using H4831SC powder. Fit and finish on the rifle are excellent, cleaning the bore was fast telling me it's pretty smooth from the factory and trigger pull was right at 3lbs.

My guess is its not the hammer spur. That only gives the hammer more mass to dent the primer. If it is, I think you are marginal. I've had to add some washers to compress the hammer spring more on some of my lever actions. Maybe you can do the same before you have to get a stiffer hammer spring.

The rifle comes with a lifetime warranty so if worse comes to worse, I'll just send it back and let them deal with it. I have my fingers crossed I won't have to. I remember reading about some having this problem with Handi Rifles using the hammer spur. That extra mass keeps the hammer from initially moving as fast as it should.

have a good clean out around the fireing pin hole maybe spray some CRC into it to make sure there is no factory greese holding it up.
no hang on a minute!!!! how are you shuting the action????? if you are closing it gently it may be the problem. That was the case with the baikal as the action not closed completely would missfire it took ages to work out what was going on.we got it to work by moving opening lever manually to close it right up and then it would fire. I will have to dig out the article on that bergara and have a look what the issue he had with it. are the primer dents the same depth???

cant lay my hands on that issue now(22) but looking at pictures of the rifle makes me wonder if you are getting the same issue we had?? load up a few times and take careful note of the lever by trigger guard to see that it goes all the way back/forward when action is closed??? the baikal would fire but pin wouldnt go all the way forward as it was semi blocked( a safety feature half working ) this is to stop it firing in the open position. a little like the trigger stop on the old 94 levers that wont let trigger be pulled unless lever is up hard against stock.
