Just before christmas my wife agreed to come shooting, this is the next installment.
Take the misses shooting Part 2.
I just did and it's probably the best fun we've had, bar the bedroom, in ages.
Spent 4 hours at a private range.
She started plinking steel targets with the .22 and was having a ball. The range caters for a range of disciplines excluding Pistols. You can shoot out to 1250 M.
So she starts knocking these steel targets over out to 125 M with the .22
We then moved up to the .223 where she used my single shot Baikal out to 125M hitting more steel targets up to 20cm in size.
My mates wife came over and let her shoot her AR15 (Pink) yes you have to see it to believe it. Nat started hitting 15cm targets at 100 M with that.
Then I gave her my 7mm08. Well BOOM she got a bit of a fright with that but did manage to hit a 24cm tin plate at 200 M. Three shots was enough.
Last but not least she got to shoot my mates 6.5x284 which has been extensively worked and modified and shoots like a dream. She hit a 12inch plate at 500M on her first and only shot.
She now is thinking that shooting is fun, and that she might like a rifle of her own...it will have to be a youth model in size as she struggled to fit my firearms. And probably .223.

Next test is tramping (hiking) then we will see if she's got the bottle to nail a deer.

Keeping you posted
Radar

Well,
You've done it now, $$$$$$$$$ havent you.
Hitting a 12 inch plate at 500 hundred first time out eh, feeling a bit intimidated yet?
She either has a natural talent or hasnt developed any bad shooting habits yet.
Sounds like an excellent day out, glad she enjoyed it.

A pink AR!? photos required.
You have no idea how envious of NZ firearm laws I am..........

Radar, that's great! I never could get my wife interested in shooting much. I think the range is a lot more fun when the experience is shared.

Bravo Zulu there Radar. My wife came with her own rifle 303Brit and her own shotgun H&R semi -auto 12 ga. She has been out hunting elk with me and also deer. She is a small lady 5'2" and has had both her guns shortened for her. She is now talking about buying her own gun for target shooting, probably a .22 of some sort as both guns were given to her as graduation gifts from her father.

Pray tell about some of your laws in NZ if you wouldn't mind.

You beauty Radar!

Its great to be out in the wild with only the missus..
heh.. Many things to do there..

Hunting would made it even better.

I started similarly like you do some 9 years ago, and now we are out hunting every year.

As ITD says mate...Bravo Zulu. Also, as Pete said...you've done it now mate...this has the potential to be expensive...but the returns are well and truly worth it mate.

Sounds like Nat is a natural mate...a hit on a 12 inch plate at 500m is quite an effort...not even sure I could do it these days (bloody eyes).

Give her a pat on the back and get her out there in the bush trampin' ASAP...get some quality time under your belts.

Cheers, Vince

In the dark:

NZ gun laws are such
<18 years you need a Full license for any F/A
18+ can own a air pistol or air rifle w/out license excepting for special category of high power air guns
Get F/A license from 16 with parents permission and can own firearms of whatever choice you take A B C D E category licenses
A Category = Standard Rifle, shotgun, air rifle including semi auto to a max of 7 rounds capacity. .22 rifles can have up to 15 rounds semi. Must provide 2 refrees when applying, one being partner/wife/parent saying you are fit and proper person

B Category = Pistols. You go through a 6 month trial with a registered pistol club, must have heavy duty security i.e. specialized safes and alarms must shoot at clubs regularly and cannot use pistol outside clubs at all. Very heavy vetting must provide 4 referees.

C Category = Collectors who can have any weapon they like, their security must be like Fort Knox and they must produce all paperwork with each weapon. Big Trouble if any go missing. Jail time!

D = Dealer - very heavy vetting done for dealers

E Category = Military style semi autos (MSSA's) - must have a real good reason to have these the only two I know is Pest destruction i.e. helicopter shooters and those who shoot the military rifle competitions other than that theres bugger all reasons to own these in NZ

Fit and Proper person = No or very few minor convictions or been out of trouble for 10+ years. If you get convictions here which include Family Violence or alcohol/Drug related you will loose your license very quickly. Police have the power to take all firearms without a warrant in certain circumstances - I've used this plenty of times. Ive served revocations on repeat drink drivers (2 or more convictions)

Thats about it in a nut shell. If you keep your nose clean and don't do anything stupid you can enjoy firearms here in NZ reasonably easily.

"Reasonably easy"?

Must be 18 to buy a long gun and 21 to buy a handgun. NC has a requirement that you have a means to secure the gun if there are minors who may be able to access it.

To purchase any long gun other than a full-auto or "short barreled" I walk into the store, they do a computerized criminal background check, I plunk down the money and leave with it.

To purchase a handgun I need a "permit to purchase" from the local sheriff's department (can take 5 business days), which acts as my background check, so I just pay and take it home.

With a concealed carry permit the background checks and "permit to purchase" are already covered so I just pay the man and carry it out.

If you want a full-auto, short-barreled long gun or suppressor you have to have more thorough background checks, get local law enforcement approval, BATF approval and pay the federal taxes before you can take the thing home. I understand that BATF can check to see that you still have the gun. Personally I don't want a full-auto or SBR bad enough to go through the hassle.

I'm sure the dealer requirements are a bit stiffer but I've never looked into that.

Yup, my wife asked me what I would like to do for my birthday. Told her that I'd like to take her to the range and shoot together. Thought she had a good time. Loved the Ruger 10/22 and Browning Buckmark knocking down steel. The 20ga at clays was her least favorite. She yelled at me the other day for not having taken her back to the range since. Need to but on my todo list.

Today, at 1:00PM EST Dee and I will have been married 41 years. (We met in October of 1970, so we knew each other for only three months.) When we were married I was both a hunter and a fisherman. While I had told her about my proclivities for these pursuits I had not spent any time away from her during courting, as I was somewhat busy with assaulting another passion, nuff said.

Shorty after our wedding it quickly became obvious to her that if she wanted to spend any daylight time with me she needed to learn to fish, she tried diligently but did not succumb to the lure of fishing. Then we moved to the country where I could easily hunt again, and once again she tried to learn, but to no avail, we weren’t on target there either. There have been many things over the 41 years we have shared most of which I can no longer do; golf, tennis, etc, etc.

Mostly, Dee likes the home fires and is a great mate, and remains the only true love of my life.

Was I sad that she was not with me hunting and fishing, yes a little at first, but over the years she was always there to meet me. The bed was always warm with the quilts she hand stitched, and the pillows she made. Our girls looked great in their handmade clothing, the pantry was stocked with canned goods from her garden and jam too, and the house and hearth were always immaculate.

God says a man that finds a wife is truly blessed (my paraphrase), and I believe that to be true.

If your wife enjoys your pursuits that is wonderful and a true blessing, but for those of the other guys whose wives are not outdoorsy don’t be forlorn and do your best to spend some time with her.

Of all the fin and fur I have tracked or stalked the best catch ever was Dee, and after 41 years she may be finally trained. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Sorry with all that I had to throw in at least one zinger. Embarassed
