Was thinking about getting a Rossi wizard but was wondering if anyone had experience with them? I was looking at one in 308 but am actually considering getting a Rem model 700 in .270, .223 or .243. Want anyones openion on the subject.

tlo7mm, you sort of covered the gamete here. What our your intended use and who is going to use it? The .308 and .270 can be used for similar purposes. The .223 is on the opposite end and the .243 is in the middle. The Wizard is single-shot and the Rem 700 is multi-shot bolt action.

Rossi claims their stock design makes the Wizard shootable with any choice of 20 rifles and 3 shotgun barrels. However, the break-open design with interchangeable barrels looks like the NEF I bought my kids.

Fit and comfort are individual preference. Aesthetically, I don't favor their stock design but the Rossi Circuit Judge seemed comfortable to me when I held it at a gun show.

I have heard reports of NEF break-open rifles not having comparable accuracy to a bolt action if this is a consideration for you.

Like slimjim said, you're kind of looking at a wide range of uses. Besides, we're not comparing apples to apples here. If you are considering the Remington 700 (or perhaps a Ruger M77 maybe?), I would say that is by far the best idea from durability (I'm only guessing here) and accuracy. If you are totally sold on the idea of being able to change barrels you would be much better served by choosing a Thompson Center. They have a very good reputation and accuracy is usually equal to or not far behind that of a good bolt gun.

my big bro has one of the previuos models in .308 and loves it for in the bush its light enough to carry all day and can be taken down and put in the pack it is accurate enough for the job of taking down deer and pigs . he cant seat projectiles far enough forward to get near the rifling though??? maybe a 7.62 spec chamber??? I suggest you look in the cabinet and see what void you have to fill, a .20ga barrel and a centrefire could set a young fella up for years, maybe a more substantial calibre with moderate recoil could be a better option??? if looking at deer???

Given that same choice I'd pick the Rem. 700 hands down. I've never owned one of the Rossi single shot rifles, but if they are like the H+R rifles, which I think they would be, they usually take a bit of tinkering to wring out good accuracy. Many times just the amount of pressure you put on the forend while shooting, either with your hand or even on a rest can change the accuracy. A bolt action is inherently more consistant.

I have no voids to fill really in my gun cabinet. I have a 17hmr, a 10/22 carbine, a 22 charger, a 22lr six shot, a .222, a 30-30, a 7mm Rem Mag, and a 12 gauge.
My wife is getting the 700 in .270 as a christmas gift and I was trying to think of something she could get me that would match or cost less then the rifle she is getting.
I like the looks of the Wizard and I can always get new barrels to shoot which ever caliber suits my fancy at the time. I really want a .223 semi auto but its going to cost more them what we are paying for her rifle. I am also considering getting a .243 so that my daughter can step up to that next year. I just can't make up my mind. I also have been considering getting a .410 as I enjoy shooting them and they are great for quail. Maybe you folks could give me some ideas.

for the price of a rossi wizard over here. you can buy a plurry good baikal .410 and have enough change to buy some good ammo. for the price of a secound barrel you are more than half way to a bottom end bolt gun.your daughter can use your 30/30 and get her deer. the only void I could possibly see is a scrub gun but the 30/30 takes care of that. ah ha you dont seem to have a front stuffer. or... check out the norinco M14 they are about $499 over here less than or about the same as the best of the cheap bolt guns.

tlo, you may not need to get a small caliber gun for your daughter. Did you see the Trail Boss recipe that OV1 found.

www.hodgdon.com/PDF/Tr...%20R&P.pdf

Also, beware of the .410 in the Wizard. In order to keep production costs low and keep the fore stock interchangeable with the barrel, they use the same barrel blanks for all caliber/gauge options. When I bought the NEF break-open shotguns for my kids to learn with, the .410 was very heavy and they couldn't handle it. The 20 gauge was so much lighter, it knocked them on their buts. I sold the 20 and cut the barrel down on the .410 so it was light enough for them to handle. The barrel had so much thickness left on it, I had no issues drilling and tapping it for a scope mount.

If you are looking for a good quality AR at a low price, try Palmetto Armory. They have complete uppers on sale this Christmas for $380. They also sell their lower receivers for $49 on occasions. Lowers are easy to build and you save some serious cash.

palmettostatearmory.com/index.php

Have you considered a new scope in return for your thoughtfulness of buying a .270 for your wife?

How about a Marlin X7 or Stevens 200 bolt gun? Either can be had for about $330 and have good reputations for accuracy.

I haven't seen the Rossi yet so can't comment on it. If you think you'd like a single shot with interchangeable barrels I can tell you that I like my T/C Encore. It costs more but there are bunch of barrels, stocks, etc. available for them. .17 to .50 caliber stuff. The Contender is another option.
