www.tacticaloperations...WATbarrel/

I found this very interesting article on barrel length and its association with bullet weight, powder, accuracy, etc. It talks as to why the trend in shorter barrels. Enjoy.

Good read, the down side of a short barrel is increased recoil and muzzle blast. The shorter barrels would not work for the bigger magnum rounds which need the length to burn all that powder. Remington did a test back in the early 2000's and for bullets moving at 2500-3000fps the lost was only 20fps per inch cut. However in the 3500-4000fps the lost was 40fps per inch.

I have a 19.5 " barrel on my Remington 788 in .308 and the muzzle blast off of that gun is horrendous. And that is the way it came from the factory.

Back in the early 80's, one of my hunting buddies dad came with us deer hunting with his weapon of choice. A Rem M700 safari grade .375 H&H magnum, Shocked let me tell you from personal experience this gun had a muzzle blast that would lay the daisies low and kicked like a mule. Smile

He did not like any barrel on any of his rifles over 20" and he had them shortened and re-crowned. Needless to say, this rifle ended up at just under 7lbs weight. Shocked

If you want muzzle blast and noise just find someone with a browning boss with porting. those suckers are just plain stupidly nasty.

Great reading but that rifle was downright ugly at the end.

Good grief Grumulkin, and I thought an 19" carbine in this caliber was bad.

Grumulkin, were you riding that bike that was hit by that crossing animal? Smile

I don't realy know a Contender that good, but I own a Dumoulin in .375 H&H and there is no way I would put such a round in a handgun unless it was loaded very reduced. I too sometimes reload it till the energy-level of a .44 RM (with handgunpowder and a 250 gr Sierra bullet), but for a full load I have the greatest respect.

Thanks for sharing that! I always preferred shorter barreled rifles if for no other reason than they are so much more handy in thick woods.
