Well, I haven’t got any to share at the moment but I really enjoyed most of these stories. I thank you for the community to giving me a nice time.

Time for another one. I was going to put this under "The Truth About Duck Hunting" in the waterfowl section but here seems more appropriate.

Back when I was still a student, my first introduction to duck hunting was using a row boat to row down a winding river "Jump" shooting ducks in the early morning. Exciting action as you slowly came around a bend and the ducks went to wing. The only problem with this type of hunting is that it only works for the first hour covering dawn to full sunrise.

The river we spent most of our time on was located near Lake St. Clair and flowed into the Thames river. One morning we (three of us) set the boat in the river in the dark and started down to where the ducks hung out. A few minutes after starting we heard a duck quack from somewhere over the bank of the river. We put into shore and crept up the bank. Dawn was just breaking so we couldn't see too well. I gave a quack on my duck call and sure enough got an answer from somewhere out in a field covered in corn stubble. We decided to get closer so, hunched over, we crept out into the field occasionally giving a quack and most often getting that single duck to reply. We knew we were getting close but couldn't see anything in the still dark field. We decided to stand and get a better look and without so much as a single quack the dawn sky in front of us exploded with winged shapes. The sound of the air passing their feathers made quite a din and we just stood there, guns in hand, awestruck. I am sure we looked like three dolts. Finally my buddy let out a carefully worded comment that included as many four letter words as possible. With that the air to the 7 o'clock behind us exploded with another rush of wings and sound. Now I am not talking a few birds, they came out like a dark cloud in both cases. With this we all dropped and exchanging glances waited 10-15 minutes for there to be enough light to see what the F^&^ was going on and just in case there were more ducks out there in the dark waiting for another nimrod mistake. When the light increased enough we stood ready to inflict our limit of damage on the waterfowl we were now sure existed all around us. Of course they were all gone. We stood squarely between two small pot hole ponds in this immense corn field. Other than feathers we had nothing to show but red faces, dirty boots and knees and a few feathers. To make matters worse we had used up the best jump shooting period. The day turned into one of those cool, blue sky ones and every duck hunter knows what that means. Dolts 0 , Ducks 3.

A friend told me he used to hunt grouse near my property many years ago. The birds here are pretty scarce, but with a good dog you could get enough shooting to make it worthwhile.
He had a great springer spaniel back then. One trip, the dog pointed three birds for him in a couple hours. He missed all three. After the third miss, the spaniel gave him a dirty look, walked back to the car, sat down and waited there for him to give up for the day.

Marty, I think you already understand why I don't teach my dog how to shoot a gun...
