Nice hunt there Stovey. Pretty funny about the escaping quail. Gotta say, that sorta thing does happen. Had a dead duck fly out of the trunk of my car one time. Ah! Memories. Very Happy

These zombie stories are funny.

Shootin' action was GOOD moose-man. Jacks were rippin' and really getting air over stuff. Prolly kicked up 30 jacks, missed a bunch, mounted on a lot but didnt fire. Good stuff and a great day of chasing critters.... and watching some fly off outta my bag too... Laughing Bringin' a hammer next time. Very Happy

I dont wring necks anymore. if there is any dought I like to break neck between 2 rocks it makes less mess and doesnt result in blood all over the show. in my canoe the heads get donked on the paddle blood all over the show, holding the head under water is less mess.I dont have too many issues with the killing power of steel since I went to loads over 1400 fps, 2-4 hits with #2 or #3 is heaps for a mallard.

I think Vince is right...need me some more wheety bix! Been wring-n-pop'n necks forever but...what can I say! Out of the bag = not in the belly!

Faststeel is something else from a long barrel...3" 20g #3's are incredible @ 40y w/ a mod choke. Not sure how much they bleed off after that but...woof! Bunny goes down. 1500/fps from my 24" H/R! Gotta be murder on a ducky! Suckers are LOUD too... Shocked

Funny really- little things like this irk my confidence...gets me thinking "need more shot, bigger pills, switch to this and that and this"...funny how the mind works.

Esp after hitching a ride with you for 25mins dinner fly's away while it's looking back at you (and it's not supposed too to be able to look back like that head flapping all over Laughing ).

I reload my own shotshells, Elvis and Stovey, if you reload, what is the recipe? Dang for my 3 1/2" Rem I made a boo boo last year cause I was to lazy to load me up some shells. Here are are the DETAILS.

I can get 1250-1300fps pushing it, in 3 1/2" I get 1350 tops, so what are you guys using?? Confused

Part of my problem is Ive been using cheap promo loads like Game-shock and Rem game loads. The shot is junk, super soft, faster and tighter ya squeeze it the worse it makes an already light 7/8oz load spread. Like the target laods better- they use chilled shot. I do so much shooting on these hunts we go through 2-4 boxes on small birds and rabbits so...they aitn really worth big $$ shot. Might start stepping up to better quailty ammo. I DO NOT reload shotshells. Gonna reaserch some 1oz loads....me want more pellets.

Stovepipe...I remember (at least I think I do) that the USSR of C had a rule that you could only take 24 or 25 shells out in the field at a time. Is that still in effect?

Kent faststeel 1 1/8th oz #2 or #3 also gamebore in the same size winchester expert is also a great load all in 3" case. the expert and gamebore are good in 2 3/4" aswell. if you can find 12ga 1 1/16oz loads for 2 3/4" doing 1500 fps grab them cause they are great loads.
I dont load for the 12 ga as the price of shells isnt too bad and steel components are just coming on the market now.

Seems to me I read that in the regs years ago when I was dove hunting outside of Stockton. I carried two boxes anyway. Figured that by the time they (the game warden) caught up with me I'd have one box shot up. Damn doves.

Roger on the deep-pockets..and to clarify, 25max on wlidlife area/managed areas...on public land it's as many as you can carry. I carry 3 boxes at all times and hunt public lands.

Here's more...(I needed a refresher)

Clarification of guns and ammo
Question: I want to confirm my understanding of the regulations regarding hunting in California with a shotgun. As I read it, those who hunt birds can only carry 25 shotshells and have three shells in their shotgun. However, hunters hunting coyotes (a nongame species) are not bound by the bird hunter shell counts. They may carry up to 10 shells in their shotgun and an unlimited number of shells with them. Is this an accurate interpretation? Does the same apply to fur bearing animals such as fox and bobcat?

What if I am in the field and encounter a warden who sees more than three shells in my gun? Will he look at the Dead Coyote Choke, No. 4 buck shotshells, FoxPro and hand calls to determine what I am actually hunting and confirm I am not a bird hunter? Seems like it is subject to officer discretion event though it is obvious nobody hunts quail using callers and No. 4 buckshot. (Bruce C., aka Cautious Sportsman)

Answer: Generally, shotguns with a three-shell maximum capacity are authorized for taking all birds and mammals in California and there are no restrictions on how many shells you may possess while in the field.

Regulations do restrict using or possessing a shotgun capable of holding more than six shells to take any bird or mammal statewide, including all furbearing and nongame mammals (Fish and Game Code, section 2010).

Furbearing mammals (fox, raccoon, beaver, ground squirrels, etc.) and nongame mammals (coyotes and bobcats, etc.) may be taken with shotguns and regulations do not limit the capacity of shot shells possessed by the hunter in the field or in the firearm (California Code of Regulations Title 14, sections 465 and 475).

Hunting regulations for Federal Wildlife Refuges (Refuges) do restrict hunters to no more than 25 shells while in the field no matter what species of bird or mammal they are pursuing, including coyotes. Some State Wildlife Areas (SWA) also have this restriction, but not all of them, so check with the SWA where you intend to hunt to confirm their policy.

According to Department of Fish and Game (DFG) Retired Capt. Phil Nelms, unless you are on a Refuge or SWA where there is a restriction on the number of shotshells that may be in your possession, you may take coyotes, bobcats and foxes throughout California with a shotgun holding no more than six shells total, and there is no restriction on the number of shells you can possess while in the field.

Totally confusing.....what you just wrote can be used as a defense anyway. I read that 3 times and....well screw it. You really need to move StoveP.
