In some states as long as it is center fire it is legal to use for hunting. Believe it or not. California allows any center fire hand gun for hunting. They feel you should use good judgement as to what caliber hand gun you use. One of the VERY few times the USSR of C has it right.

I would have used the term "common sense" but after the new law on "no open carry". I thought it best not too.

The ultimate caliber....
From squirrels to Grizzleys The .30 seems a good choice with a good shooter but that still covers a mess of cartridges.
What about a single cartridge for that range of animals?
A 12 ga. will work well for that range of animals too - you just have to get closer - or, in the case of the grizzley, let it get closer.
I was always taught the most important guns to have are:
1. Bolt action 22 rimfire (ammunition is availble and universal)
2. 12 ga shotgun [pump] (same as above)
3. Bolt action rifle using military round larger than 6mm
4. magnum revolver in .357 or .44 ("parent" cartridges that are smaller for light loads)
The .22 can be used for pests and small game, the 12 ga. and military loads can be used for anything from small game to dangerous game - the most "universal" weapons around, and the pistol can be used for anything from squirrels to deer and it is concealable.
all the guns can shoot any load from a cartridge in that chambering - that is why no autos are listed they don't handle the light loads and the hot loads without modifications.
There is no reason one should not add to these basic four guns but these are the "must haves".
The shotgun is the most universal of all because it can be used to get birds in flight, small animals, and kill a big bear using a slug.

Good post, Paul. I guess I must agree with you since, after selling everything I could spare, exactly those 4 firearms plus a .38 snubby carry gun and a .22 revolver for practice are what remain.
Well, a Schmidt-Rubin K-31 and the .300 WBY would count for the "military round larger than 6mm"

A damn fine post Paul
I too subscribe to your suggestions, and have all of those calibres on hand, and use them regularly. Only extra I have is a .243 which, although I know is a 6mm, is bigger than the accepted standard military cartridge these days (.223), and delivers a bit more performance.
My armoury of rifles/guns include a Model 94 (30.30), 12g O/U smoothbore, numerous .22 rimfire bolt actions and my .243 Weatherby. Unfortunately I do not have any pistols these days...but come the revolution...
Cheers, Vince
