I remember seeing an interview of a US Navy officer about the time of the first Gulf War. A reporter asked him what would happen when a modern missle struck one of these "old battleships". The officer replied "well, it would probably scorch the paint."

hey pumpkinslinger, I like your Ma kettle quote. I loved watching Ma and Pa kettle when I was growing up, and they were old then.
THis one is my favorite though.
I think its the same way our Gov does the budget.

Beautiful ship, Stovey! Now those are some barrels!! The shells weight 2000 pounds!!! They cut my travel off. Not sure when I will be your way again.

Magbloodynificent. I got up real close and personal with the Missouri when she was in Sydney some years ago...incredible battle wagons.

Cheers, Vince

Awesome firepower. I remember reading a story awhile back about the USS Iowa taking FDR across the Atlantic ocean to some conference and the USS Iowa was accidentally fired on by one of the destroyers escorting her on the trip by a torpedo!!

Ya know it's tough when it takes a typhoon Cobra to damp her spirit some. Still made it home too.

That's called American Engineering. It never goes out of style and we could use a shite-ton more of it today in the soft-spine weenie-filled world of koombyeyah we live in today. Think of all she's seen! It's a different world she lives in now.

What a glorious old girl and I can't wait to see her and thank her for all she's done for me and mine. Cool

Here's some job stimulis....it's called prezerving and remembering history- ya know, the little things that made the world a safer place to live w/o being overtrodden by thugs, huns, butchers and maniacs. Ya know- the stuff the uber-libs can't stand our kids learning about anymore in school- pride in Country, REAL history, how WE made this world less of a hole and more of a globe.

Hey Obama, ya listening or are you too busy rolling around in bed with your solar engery buddies....(epic fail). We could put America to work forever restoring and prezerving history. But it's more important now to spend billions on curly light bulbs that dont work and failing solar energy "green" jobs. Green jobs. Laughing

Bring 'em home, fix 'em up, teach our kids and Never Forget.

History is important- don't learn from it? Doomed to repeat it.

ByTheWay...Those "curly" light bulbs "that don't work" are made in China for GE...

When I was stationed on a Destroyer Escort (USS Charles Berry (DE-1035) in Pearl Harbor in the '60s we were sent out to escort the USS Missouri (BB-63) into Pearl Harbor. Talk about your HUGE ships. Abslutely miniturized my ship. A Beauty to behold...

And they are conisdered "haz-mat" here. It's illegal to put one in the trash and if you bust one you have to call a special clean up crew and evacuate your home and air it out. No lie...here's a snippet on it.

Green my arse....more BS.

When a fluorescent light breaks please refer to the following guidelines:

Open all doors and windows to ventilate the area for at least 15 minutes.
Turn off your AC/Fan/Heater so as not to circulate any mercury vapor
Young children and pregnant women should leave the area during cleanup.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as a dust mask and gloves to keep bulb dust and glass from being inhaled or contacting your skin.
Carefully remove the larger pieces and place them in a secure closed container.
Next, begin collecting the smaller pieces and dust. It is recommended that you use two stiff pieces of paper such as index cards or one of the many commercial mercury spill kits available.
Put all material into a sealed container. Pat the area with the sticky side of duct, packing or masking tape. Wipe the area with a damp cloth.
Put all waste and materials used to clean up the bulb in a secure closed container and label it "Universal Waste - broken lamp".
Take the container for recycling to the household hazardous waste facility (HHW) nearest you.
If the bulb breaks on carpet, the State of Maine's report suggests removing the area of carpet that has been contaminated as a precaution. If this is not feasible, it is recommended that you ventilate the area for several hours as well as during the process of vacuuming because vacuuming can circulate the vapor. If you vacuum, make sure to dispose of the bag along with the broken CFL at your local HHW. You should also ventilate the room during the next few times you vacuum the area.
Consider other Household Hazardous or Universal Wastes that you may have in your home such as pesticides, paint, oil, batteries, non-empty aerosol cans, and electronic devices that you can take to the HHW at the same time as the broken CFL.

Don't tell no one, but I put them in the trash and shoot them with my "trusty Daisy BB gun".
