What kind of elk? Anterless? Spike? Big antlered bulls?

Cow elk tags sell for $400-700, Spike tags or General unit bull tags can generally be bought over the counter for around $400... full blown LE bull tags are generally drawn, but if you buy a landowner tag it will run 20 to 50k. Highest bull elk tag in my state sells for around $250,000.

Most LE bull elk tags take 18 years to draw for rifle.

Deer tags are $300ish for general units, LE tags are around $600. Most LE deer tags take between 10 and 19 years to draw. Landowner deer tags cost between $2,000 and 15,000.

Thats all just tag fees... outfitter fees, hotel, food etc is on top of that.

*Edit: Consider adding Pronghorn antelope to your list of critters to hunt here. They are plentiful, easy to harvest and cheaper than anything else. Very unique looking animals.

Hunting in the USA seems very different than in Africa.
We dont have "TAGS" or even use the word relative to hunting. LE another no idea...lol.

When we go out hunting... the ProHunter or farm owner tells you which one to shoot... we have 2 prices... trophy and non trophy.

Prices differ but we have paid the following:

Daily fees are $50 per day... this cover the accommodation and the vehicle fees... we hunt from a pickup with shooting rack. When you do walk and stalk it gets cheaper. About $10-15
3 meals and drinks(no alcohol) are $25 per day... one issue... you always eat to much!
Collection at airport 100miles away... $40-50
1x Kudu 1x Gemsbuck/oryx 2x Springbuck 1x african hog +-$2200
extra Wildebeest $300-500...
So for $3000 you can hunt 6 animals in 6-7 days.

The wild Animals here I talk about are not privately owned, they are owned by the "public". A Tag is a license to kill an animal. Because there are more hunters than animals we have drawings for tags, these are "LE" or Limited Entry" tags. Some landowners with enough acreage are awarded tags they can use themselves or sell to offset damages done by the wild animals.

It is very different here I guess.

It depends on the state you're going to and also if you're a resident or non resident of the state. Our fees here in Oregon are as follows;

resident hunt license $29.50---nonresident $148.50
deer (controlled hunt or general hunt) $24.50---nonresident 383.50
bighorn sheep $122.50---nonresident $1,308.50
black bear $14.50---nonresident $190.50
cougar $14.50---nonresident $14.50
elk (controlled or general hunt) $42.50---nonresident $508.50
antelope $44.50----nonresident $341.50
rocky mt. goat $122.50---nonresident $1,308.50

The controlled hunts are tags that must be drawn for, that is you pay for the drawing and wait and see if you're name gets drawn so you can buy the tag. The general hunt is for anyone who buys a license and general tag to hunt public lands. A non-resident member of the uniformed services may purchase licenses, tags and permits at resident rates.

Hogs are are 24/7/365. Why stop at 2? They are such a problem you can hunt them from helocopters here in TX (Texas)!

How many years does it take to draw Mt Goat? I have to admit, getting ready for my wifes hunt in a few weeks... I'm super excited and would trade all my moose bonus points in a heartbeat for a Mt Goat tag. Does your state offer alot of tags for them?

Same here in Florida, cept for the chopper part. Shoot as many hogs as you like, even night hunting.

Dallan here's all the info I have (no personal experience) from the regs;

All rocky mt. goat hunts are controlled hunts through public drawings. A person may draw only one hunt in a lifetime. Tag numbers vary according to population size. Orientation class with dept. biologist is required. Without listing the hunt areas by name (there are 11 in all) six of them offer only one tag, three of them offer 2 tags and two of them offer 3 tags. Only one area is designated for nonresident with only 2 tags available and last year there were 1,573 applicants for that area's tags. There are three new hunt areas this year. Non-residents may enter a raffle, drawn on May 17th ($11.50 per ticket).

Looks like it's the luck of the draw, not how many years, just how lucky you happen to be. Feel lucky? Ore. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife

Us Kiwis hunt public for free, you can get a firearm permit as a tourist and bring in a category A firearm; bolt action, lever action semi auto up to 7 rds mag. Once you get into the trophy farms the costs start to rise. Deer 5 species, pigs, thar and chamois
So for a few bucks you could with the right luck bag a trophy but if you want to make sure you can pay for it, but you're likely to be given a hard time by and real kiwi hunters.
For better advise go onto the Huntandfish forum in NZ.
You never know - you might get to see a real rugby team in action!!!!!

Dallan if you got your old knees over here, I would take the time off work and take you for a few walkies that my old knees can handle....we can hunt all year around but finding a deer is never a certain thing. you dont have to get all serious and mountain goatish to find deer or even thar for that matter..now a big trophy animal however....on public land is a matter of time persistance and plain ol luck. one for the freezer isnt too hard.
