Took my 11 year old boy out for his first ever quail hunt saturday for his birthday. I had a pretty good spot where I had seen quail almost every single day this summer right up through the deer hunt. We went all over, not a track. Finally it was time to head back, we left the property and within a quarter of a mile we come around a corner and see this in the middle of the road.
He got a good lesson in "those stupid birds outsmarting us!". Not a place where you can hunt, we slowly drove past with them standing 6ft off the side of the road, taunting. He was so excited, too bad we couldnt get into them. I dont know if its the same group I saw previous and the weather moved them lower, or if it was just a different group we happened across.
Either way we got to spend some good quality time together.

I hope so! Just not to anyone here....
And they do taunt...out here? Legal shoot limit is 150y from a bldg. They love hanging out well within that, right abouts 50y or so...ever herd a covey of quail a hundred yards oh you've all read the story hahahaha.... Them chickens is tricky!
Wait'll he bags his first one and holds him in hand...man...what a FEELING. Boy was I hooked after that- soft warm critter, pretty plumage, yummy in the pan too!

I was out delivering papers n pamphlets with the wife this morning and a small covey (6-8 birds) were spotted up a fellas driveway for the secound time, yes this is a small town and yes the section does back on to the river but hells bells batman those birds are only 25 yrds from a busy road and businesses, not to mention all the cats n dogs in town, I will try to get a photo if I get another day off.
