Hey Y'all:
Does anyone know a gunsmith with experience working on Winchester 9422s? I have one that needs a new barrel installed and head spacing set. I have the new barrel, just need to find someone to do it.
THANKS
Tim

Just a little curious: what's wrong with the old barrel? I too have such a Winchester lever action in .22 WMR, but I tought the ammo is far too expensive to be able to ruin the barrel...

Ammo is a right bit steep isn't it?
BTW, it is a 9422M XTR
Well, although I can't see it on the outside, the barrel seems to have a bulge. When I pass a patch through the barrel, it gets really loose for about an inch or two about an inch from the end of the barrel. Also, no matter what ammo I tried, my groups range from 2.25 to 5.5 inches at 50 yards. Not much good as a small game gun with this type of grouping. So, I found a new barrel to put on it and need someone to do the work. It looks easy but actually takes a machine shop to do it as it has to be pressed in, and done exactly right as there is a retaining pin that appears to have zero tolerance for miss-aligment.

Are you thinking of finding a local gunsmith or is sending the rifle away an option?

Hey TC...I believe that Elvis is talking about Deer Sniper. He builds some beautiful guns.

Well TC, we are talking about the same thing, mine is also an XTR, I think it's somewhat the luxury version, but mine is still almost new.
Now about your problem. It sounds familiar to the problems these old military Mausers are showing now and then. Often it's cured by putting the barrel on a lathe and drilling a hole somewhat bigger then the caliber. Making a kind of recessed crown as in some of the match rifles.
With old military Mausers they usualy drill about 5 or 6 inches, but in your case 2-3" could be enough.
Easy done, almost anyone with a lathe can do it, it shouldn't be expensive and your rifle will keep the same looks.

Thanks Al...I recently read about that. If I can't get it replaced, I'll try that.

Either/or...Just need it fixed. I emailed a couple of smith's within driving distance but have never gotten a reply back.

When such a smooth operating thing was in cal .22 Hornet, then I think I would use it a lot more. But being .22 WMR is a big problem in a place where rimfire is not allowed to hunt + I've always prefered reloaded rounds as something extra on my shooting and I cannot imagine how I would start reloading for a .22 WMR...
