Today we have air temps in the teens and the winds are howling 25-40 mph with about 3 inches of snow down and a little more coming…it was the perfect day to…. Dig a 4 foot deep hole to patch a leak in the water line that supplies my stables… I normally would put on my welldiggers waders and do it myself but with air temps predicted to be near zero with sustained winds for next few days, I pulled out my wallet and called in a guy with a JD D50 excavator and a concrete saw. We had to wait for his partner to get the excavator to the site and for “Julie” to do an emergency marking of the utilities. The utility marker barely got out of his truck and said we were all good…. I had done some work earlier in that area and knew that there was a power line within 10 feet of where we needed to dig. He was really irritated that he got called out in a blizzard and was really giving me a hard time about it. I told him he was getting at least time and a half if not double time and to go hook up to the transformer across the road and check it again…. Sheepishly he came back and marked a bright red line in the snow right where I knew it would be. I told him he would have had a lot more discomfort if we had dug into the power line that he had said was not there…
Once the excavator arrived it was less than an hour to dig down to the pipe and make the repair and another 45 minutes to put it all back together. I am not looking forward to this bill but it is good to not have to haul water in sub zero wind chill and not to have to dig a grave sized hole in wet clay by hand in a blizzard.

I hear ya mate...I hate digging holes that big at anytime, let alone in weather that cold mate. At least it is now all over and done with and your water leak is gone...saving you an awful lot of work.

Cheers, Vince

As Tim Taylor would say, you just can't have enough power tools! Glad you got it fixed so easily (accept for the empty feeling on your backside).
