I was at Camp Perry this week and watched two guys shoot 20 shots each at 600 yards. All 40 shots were well inside a 12" 10 ring and 18 were inside a 6" X ring....

Did I mention these were with 20" AR service rifles fired from prone position with only a sling support in 8-15mph switching crosswinds using iron sights!!

80 gr.SMK's at 2700fps

I did not do as well that day but managed a 93-4X the next day when the wind held steady at 5-8.

NICE !! That's some fine shooting -and with IRON SIGHTS !!! I don't think I could even see those targets at 600 yards without optics.

The aiming black is 36" on the 600 target and it extends to the 7 ring.

The bull looks the same against the front post as a 6" bull at 100 yards.

I have learned that with sight alignment and trigger control - iron sights can be very effective. BUT - very small errors in sight alignment can have huge affects at distance. .008" error at your nose is 6" at 600 yards(1moa)

Dawgdad, bet you had loads of fun! How many rounds did you send down-range?

I had 4 matches - 40-30-50 and 30 rounds. 40 of those were at 600 yards.
the rest were 200 and 300 which seemed pretty short.

Know what you mean. Once you get comfortable shooting at longer range, they typical to mid ranges seem to close.

I have to tip my hat to you. I have enough trouble seeing my sights, let alone a 600 yard target. I've come to terms with the fact that my days of using iron sights are behind me. I wouldn't however mind giving that 600 yard range a try with my bolt guns, scoped of course.

Why not your scoped AR?

That would also work once I get some loads worked up of sufficient bullet weight. With the 1-7" twist rate I should be able to stabilize bullets of a decent size. I guess in my case the major limitation in bullet size would be the magazine.

Many shoots will load the VLDs long and shoot them single shot.

That's what I mean . . My old eyes can't make out a 6" bull at 100 yards very well with iron sights. Guess its time to finally break down and get my eyeglass Rx updated.

fyi - for 1:7 AR the magic load that a whole bunch of service rifle and match rifle shooters use is a 75-80 grain VLD like the Berger, Hornady A-max or SMK with varget or RE- 15 or N140 at about 2700 fps.

I use the 75 Amax with 24.5 RE -15 seated to .015" from lands.

Is is the post or the bull that goes fuzzy on you?

At our DCM rifle match yesterday, a high master shooter racked up a 495-15X score out of a possible 500 with an AR. I ran the match and turned in his score to the NRA. All the best...

Did you take a picture of the target? Can you post it?
