i picked up a mauser (i think) in the 30-06 cal. the scope mounts have the markings covered but i have made out the serial number on the right side and there are 7 didgets and on the left side all i can make out because of the scope mount is the letter S and either an H or two 1's and in capital print. it has 20 " barrell and on the bolr it has the safty on the right side and on the left side it has a bolt release lever. can anyone tell me how to idenify this gun..

don't mean to insult, just trying to help. Do you know what a Springfield 1903 is?

It depends. A picture would be very helpful. If the serial number has seven digits, it is not a German military Mauser. At this point, it is anyone's guess what you have. All the best...

5$ Says its a M1903 Springfield Rifle.
Underneath the scope mount on the front Receiver ring there will be the information on model etc used to make this sporter rifle.

can't get the damn screws to break loose . i can make out 7 digits on the right side )the 5th may be an I) and on the leftside i can make out ( S) and then either II,, H,,M maybe an upside down U. the reqson i'm thinking these ,the legs of the numbers or letters are side by side.

If it has a lot of markings that are visible in that area its more then likely the M1903, German and other countries generally had either crests (of royalty when they had Kingdoms) and/or very few written markings at all on their Mausers.

Try a little bit of heat on those screws and they may come loose. The other halfs hair dryer is good as you can't overheat the metal that way.

the safty system on this rifle is a MARK II safty .it's stamped on the end and the bolt release lever has ON/OFF also stamped on it. the bolt is jeweled and under the bolt handle i found (R)nd on the bolt beside the handle the (R) is there too

Was there any blue or Red or Green stuff on the screws that you managed to take out?
