I got a Johnny Stewart PM 4 wireless caller. Thought I'd try some Yote hunting. Now I suppose I'll have to get another Rifle. I have a .270, and a 7 Mag but they might be a little much. I might use my old Stevens 22 mag-20ga. OU. What do you guys think?

I'd find a little .223 you like, get a decent scope and run with it!

Let me know how you like that call, I've been looking at some too.

That's the Cal. I was thinking of. If I can find any ammo anywhere.

I just bought new .223 brass at the last gun show. I would think that the next most common would be a .22-250. However, if you roll your own, any .22 centerfire could work.

Do not for get to get some hand calls to go along with the electronic caller. Sometimes you need to change up the sounds a bit and it is a lot easier to do that on the fly with a hand call.

Nothing wrong with the .270 with light bullets. I now have several predator guns in several calibers but when I got started I used a M-70 in 30-06 with a 110gr V-max bullet.

If you just need a reason to buy a new gun, .204, 223, 22-250, .243 and some of the WSSM cartridges are the most popular varmint/predator calibers. Depending on the type of terrain and distance you expect to be shooting some are better choices than others.

I prefer the .243 with either the 58 or 75 V-max. both are bang flop performers while some of the lighter calibers will leave you with spinners and runners. I do not like to track down the coyotes after I shoot them I prefer to just go pick them off of the ground. Very Happy

For now I just plan on lowering the yote population some around here, and get some off season practice as well. I'll try the .270 for now, this will be my main Deer gun and the extra practice will be a plus. I agree about the extra hand calls to change things up a bit. I'm sure these dogs around here are somewhat used to the same old series of calls from the e-callers. It should be a lot of fun.
Thanks

If you can get some of the 100-115 grain loads for the .270 they are flat out hummers. But the 130 grain deer load will kill them plenty dead too.

You are entering into the pupping season. If you have the pup distress on the caller I would use that in addition to some howling to draw the males in too. Distress will work but if they have been called at alot maybe not so much. I had good luck late in the season switching to a feline distress o my phantom caller. do not be afraid to try some dofferent things and probably stay on the call a bit longer than normal too, 40-60 minutes instead of 20-30 per location.

I have the Canine Puppies,Coyote Pup Distress,Canine Pups, Coyote Growls, along with many other rabbit, rodent, bob cat in heat, etc...five cards with four different calls per card.I can use three cards at a time and have two calls going at once. Seems to be real loud and the range of the remote is 100yds. the seller claims he had this out to 225 yds. and the remote worked fine. We'll see. I set it on my deck this morning and hit the Crow call, within less than a minute I had a dozen Crows overhead. Too bad this wouldn't work that quick on Yote's..lol
I have some 130 gr. .270's, I've yet to fine tune my scope in yet on these.

Well I learned something today. Wear a heavier coat if you plan on shooting your 12 ga. with three in. turkey loads at Crows. I haven't shot that thing in a while, I'm used to shooting my Rifle off a table with sand bags and holding it lightly and squeezing the trigger. That damn mossberg can get ya. LOL

Turkey loads are thumpers. Try some waterfowl steel on them.

I have had coyotes come to the call that fast so be ready, It is just that I have been having to wait longer around my area to see the yotes. They are very wary.

I think I figured up once that a 3.5" 12 ga turkey load had about 3800 ftlbs of energy at the muzzle! That's in the same range as a .375 H&H Magnum. All for a 20 lb bird...

Back to coyotes... I recently picked up a magazine called "Predator Xtreme" that seems to have some good info for beginning predator hunters. Tips on calls and scents.

I've heard the same of 3" 12 ga. sabot deer loads....

Thanks for that, I'm headin' out Saturday morning to see if we can't find a few around here.....

It didn't go very well... I never saw a yote....

But I saw plenty of turkeys...

Since I consider myself a Turkey hunter before a coyote hunter, I guess it wasn't a total loss...

I managed to get one halfway decent picture of the flock we're gonna hunt this spring...

This shot is from 400 yds....
