Has anyone looked at this gun at all? There was an article about it in the latest issue of Predator Xtreme. I saw somewhere else that the retail was going to be $691 and it was going to weigh around 7 1/4 to 7 1/2 lbs. Was wondering what your opinions were on it. Can't have to many guns right? Smile www.predatorxtreme.com...ticleID=80 . If you do a google search Chuck Hawks has a better pic.

well after owning a savage with the synthetic stock, first thing i would do is GET RID OF IT and stick it on a good laminate stock of your likeing.. otherwise not bad, basically the model 10 just tricked out a bit more..

Yeah, I am going to order one in .204 Ruger. FYI- the 204 outperforms the 22/250 and 220 swift out past 300 yards and it does it with half the recoil. I am a die hard swift fan, but even the 204 outperforms it at its best. The high Ballistic coefficient and sectional density makes it a better long range and short range performer. Energy is calculated by bullet weight and terminal velocity. Look at some Ballistic charts. The 39 and 40 grain bullets at over 3900 fps beat the 22 cal bullet at 4200 fps.
The real world ballistics are very close and nearly negligible. The great advantage is that the .204 barely kicks, uses 1/2 the powder and is cheaper than the 220 or 22/250. Nearly the same as the 22/25 in price, but if you handload, the powder is nearly half. It is 1/2 of the swift.

As far as Savage stocks go, this stock is a McMillan, pillar bedded stock. Try to find better than that. The Trigger is an accutrigger adjustable down to 1.5 Lbs.

I have the New Savage 17 HMR 93 thumbhole rifle, it has a 2.5 LB accutrigger. I can shoot that Gun all day under 1/2" at 100 yards. My best group was just over 3/8", with a 17 rimfire. !!!!!!!!!! I have HUGE hopes for the new Predator hunter. As a Varmint Hunter, I see no need for anything else but this 204, except, the 17 HMR will let you go crazy on squirrels very inexpensively, while the 204 is cooling off. BTW, I have a 243, and it is devastating on dogs, but it's a lot of recoil, noise and powder for not much in return. I think Nosler should make a Partition bullet for the 204, that would be hot.
My Hunting partner took two coyotes, last week, both with a 22 Mag, it "killed" them up at 50 and 75 yards. I will try my 17hmr next time.

Welcome to HuntingNut SwiftKill61.

I'm with Bushy 110%, good info and a good read. I am particularly interested in your comments on the .243, my chosen calibre, along with my much loved Winchester Mod 94 in 30.30, for hunting out here in Australia.

I look forward to more input from you.

Cheers, Vince

Great read verminator - thanks.

You will not go wrong with a Savage - best shooter out of the box I ever owned. And you will love the accutrigger.

swiftkill - you mentioned a McMillian stock? My local dealer indicated that Boyd's were making the stocks and that they were pillar bedded.

Just curious since I recently purchased a Savage BGTV with the same stock that Howa uses - Boyd's. If it's different I surely would like to know and I'll have some words with my dealer.

The 204 ruger only outperforms the 22-250 in speed but not in ft lbs of energy and when I'm sitting there calling coyotes and a cougar happens to sneak in for a meal I'm damn sure gonna be glad I have my 22-250 instead of a little 204. It does shoot a bit flatter. Rolling Eyes50 gr V-max -2.8 inches at 300 yrds for the 22-250 with 689 ft lbs energy verses 32 gr at -2.7 inches for the 204 at 300 yrds with 469 ft lbs energy. Hmmmmm..... yep I'll take my 22-250 and I don't care that I'll burn a bit more powder, that's what I bought it for, I like the smell of burnt powder. Smile

By the way......what recoil........ ??? Neutral

Hi Guys, I just got back here, sorry. I see some activity.
1st, with all due respect,
the 204 DOES outperform the 22/250 and the swift, but with certain parameters. Performance is relative to efficiency and return on investment, IMO.
I am a die hard swift user and I hate to admit it more than anyone. Look at the ballistics at Hornady's website. See Below.

Let's also say that the swift has greater energy and ballistic performance POTENTIAL than the 22/250 (because it does). Remember the 22/250 is SLOWER THAN THE SWIFT. (LOL). So, let’s not waste our time with the 22/250. Hee-Hee! I crack me up.

The real Key here is this:

Lets say that for all practical purposes, the ballistics are EQUAL or insignificant between the 204 and 220. The 204 has the same terminal performance as the swift But with less powder, less blast, less recoil, less expensive loaded ammo, less expensive to reload, lighter weight ammo in your shirt pocket, shorter barrel, lighter gun to carry, better handling, less heat, longer shot strings, less throat wear, less fatiguing to shoot, longer barrel life, able to see your bullet impact while using a lighter weight gun without a muzzle brake.

Hornady shows the 22/250 - 40 and 50 gr. At 50 fps less than the swift. And shows the 55’s at the same speed at 3680 (well, they are wrong here, Ha Ha Ha) The swift can push the 55 faster, but THEY just load them the same.

The 40 grain 204 CLEARLY has LESS DROP across the board.
It retains more velocity and energy with less drop at 500 yards than a 40 gr. .22 at attainable speeds. That is not considering some wildcats that might get 4300-4400 fps with a 22 cal. But then there are .20 wildcats that get THAT velocity too.

Also, remember, the speeds for the 220 swift and 22/250 are with 26” Barrels.
The 204 has a 24” barrel. The Savage predator has a 22” Barrel.

Bullberry shows that the 204 only loses about 7-10 fps per inch of barrel. The 204 optimal barrel length is ONLY 23”. That’s where the fastest velocity was found.

My 220 accuracy load is a 40 gr at 4177 fps at 26" Bbl., so I’m not even at 4200 fps. However, I have pushed it to 4250 fps. (because it is faster than the 22/250).(just figured I’d throw that in.)

The .20 has a greater ballistic coefficient and simply overcomes wind resistance and gravity and WIND BETTER.

Less powder, less recoil, less expensive LESS DROP,
Virtually Equal ENERGY to the swift. Less wind drift. Less time in the air.
Ability to see the shot on the follow-through without a brake. Less heat, less throat wear, longer life, longer strings of shooting without overheating.
Shorter barrel, better handling, less weight, less barrel whip, less muzzle blast, less noise, better accuracy (repeatability) easier to attain and maintain
A 1-2 inch difference in drop on a squirrel or PD could be a miss. FIVE inches is definitely a miss.
BETTER is BETTER.
So, you tell me, how is the 22/250 or swift better in your opinion? I just gave you the facts.

OK, I’ll give you that the 22/250 and Swift can give BETTER SHORT RANGE effects due to slightly more energy, but you probably won’t see the shot unless you have a 15 pound rig. So, I’ll concede that they are better short range performers. Whoopiiiii !

I have not seen the ballistics at 600 + yards. I'm sure a .22 - 69 grain match bullet will do more than the 204 out past that distance, if that's what you want, BUT, we are considering powder, recoil, ability to see the shot, etc.
That's a huge part of the equation or why I think the 204 is better.
I won't get rid of my swift cause it shoots .3 inch groups all day and I'll need something to shoot when all my friends are using my .204.

I am an Engineer so, Cold hard facts are hard to ignore. Don't be disappointed with your 22/250, just get a 204 also.
I have to rename my 204 the 204 swift though or I'll have to change my handle. (LOL).

I HAVE OFFICIALLY CRUSHED MY SOAP BOX!

Respectfully,

204 Ruger Velocity Tests
Thanks for your patience waiting on the results of this test. We have been promising to get this job done for several months and finally have the time to post the results.
I chose a T/C Contender in 24" length as a starting point. Like our previous data on the 17 HMR, I shot 5 rounds thru our Oehler Skyscreen II Chronograph, recorded the results, then cut 1 inch from the barrel and recrowned to repeat the velocity test.
It was my intention to go all the way to a 10" barrel. But . . . at about 18" length I started getting frequent "error" readings – from muzzle blast. I firmed up my Sky Screens to prevent movement and got good results until about 16" length. At this point I had to move back about 20 feet from my screens and tie down everything in the immediate area of my shop. I was pulling objects off shelves 30 feet away. At 14" it was impossible to get five dependable readings – because of this extreme blast – so my test was terminated at this length.
For my test I'd be forced to say that 23" is the optimum length. Those of you who know me, realize that I was hoping to find highest velocity at 20". But my chronograph won't lie just because I'm a fan of shorter barrels.
I have no answer for the fact that my test showed a high velocity of 200 fps slower than advertised – probably just a difference in testing procedure. Here's hoping this data is of interest and may help our shooters in making ideal decisions in length for their needs.
Good shooting!

All 5 shot groups were shot after a damp patch of Eezox was pushed through the bore. This was done to clean out any metal particles from the cutting operation and to assure a clean bore for each group.

yes you have great facts and everything you said is dead on. but lets do this in real life. my brother has a ton of guns. he loves his 204 BUT countless times when he hits a coyote it doesnt die. yes i know what everyone will say hes not hitting it in the right spot.......yeah yeah yeah.....it does slow them down for the hounds to catch up and finish them off which is good practice but when it comes down to it a .22 caliber bullet just takes them down alot faster.

i will agree that the 204 is a dang flat shooter

Seeing that a new member "Hijacked/Spammed" the subject of the original poster and turned it into a my caliber is better than your caliber kind of post I am locking down this post and recommend further posts on the hijack/spammed subject be taken to "Spam-O-Rama" section or start a new post on a specific topic in the related forum section.
A reminder to all old and new members. You know what Hijacking is and how it makes the original poster wonder what is going on here at Hunting Nut. Hijacking is not allowed here and it is not enforced strongly enough. Nuf Said
