So what do you carry for food in the outdoors ?? Confused

Right now I basically what I have always done. Tin cans and quick to prepare meals. Basically the same stuff just different main "courses". Meals go from 1,400 Calories to 2,000+ Calories based on the main "course".

Not too heavy but decently complete meals on there own, all I could ask for is small cans of cheese. I sure do like my cheese! Cool

Anyways this is the "standard" items in each one.

  • Rice, Dehydrated "New Orleans" Style
  • Tuna, 1 Can Spicy Thai Flavor
  • Biscuits, 1 Package Plain
  • Soup, Dehydrated 1 Package Chicken Noodle
  • Fruit, Dehydrated 2 Bars "Fruit To Go"
  • Kool-Aid Singles, 3 Sleeves Cherry Flavor

Just that is 1117 Calories, and as a percent of your "Daily intake" it is 30% Fat, 12% Cholesterol, 71% Carbohydrates, 24% Fiber, 239% Sodium! ( To think I add more salt on everything I eat, I like my salty food! Shocked ), and 77% Protein, 175% of Vitamin C and about 25% of both your Calcium and Iron daily intake.

Canned Spam (2197 calories), Spicy Herring (1557 calories), Chicken (1397 calories), Turkey (1417 calories) is currently whats in my pack. Laughing

What do you guys do ?? Confused

And don't say the whole pantry cause you make your horse carry in Bushy. Very Happy

Dimitri

Mountain House freeze dried all the way while backpacking and weight is at a premium, such as sheep hunting. You can pack in two weeks worth of food with negligible weight. If hunting close a boat or vehicle and weight does not matter, then any canned soups, chili, lunch meats etc. I am not a calorie counter, I eat when I am hungry until I am full. Instant oatmeal is also nice to pack.

Roklok I do the same, can guesstimate what will fill me up. Then go from there to make sure I am eating enough of the stuff I need to be eating. Smile

Tried Mountain House but rather go canned food then it. Didnt enjoy it as much as I could have I guess.

Very Happy jerky-lots of jerky! There is a book that I have and have read about food making/preserving,etc.,with some of the recipes from pioneer times in the western U.S.,lewis and clark expedition, etc. It gives many different types of survival foods-natural,superhigh calories. They made a pemmican for the army-that the daily ration was 5000+calories a day. That will keep you warm and well fed!Just need to learn how to use a food processor and a bakeoven.

I definately hunt the higher altitudes - so for me my day pack will usually house the following- I keep a camel back full of fresh water - usually pack in a gatorade - sunflower seeds, jolly ranchers, a couple power bars, a couple packs of cheese crackers, a couple tins of vienna sausages and a couple sandwhiches I make that morning and of course trail mix and a bag of Jerkey- this usually sustains me for the long sits or provides the quick energy to make it up that last hill, it also provides me enough sustanance to make it one night in an emergency - of coursee I always have matches & tinder, poncho for shelter, rope & small load pulleys (500 - 700lb), compass, whistle and other emergency items - 2 pair of dry socks, extra set of gloves and a mini first aid kit - I usually never go beyond a mile or 2 from camp and we all know the general area where our companions are and check in at set times and/or locations throughout the day for safety. You know I had to throw that last part in there - especially if there are any yung'uns reading these.

And I thought I was eating high on the hog with my spam tacos!! Mad

Heck, when I was younger and running a five-mile trapline, I'd eat half of my bait and drink out of stock ponds and cow troughs! Very Happy That's why I'm a tough old buzzard!

Candy/Chocolate, Jerky and Trail mix doesn't count as food. They are the thing you pack in any pockets that are empty, so you can to munch on as you go. Laughing

My vest currently carries 4 QT of water 100oz Hydration bladder & a 1 QT Canteen, also have a 1L Nalgene with the pack.

As for whats in the pack, spare clothing (pants, shirt, socks, thermal underwear, hat), stove (+ Pot, eating dish, fuel, cleaning pad), water filter, the food and more ammunition. My vest carries my field items (Compass, fire starting items, maps, water tablets, signal mirror, flash light, batteries), 2 First Aid kits (Minor injuries and the "oh shit" kit I am putting together), My Rifle Kit (Spare parts, tools, cleaning kit) and my note book etc.

I'm not in areas like some of you guys are but I always have some pork and beans ,jerky, water, some hard candy. Flash light, knifes, lighter and such I always carry my back pack while hunting so these things are always with me when in the field. Also my cover scents, grunt call and my normal hunting supplies Very Happy
