Flitz the bore?

Some time back I read something about using Flitz metal polish in the bore of a rifle. It wasn't so much an "accurizing" technique as it was intended to reduce fouling/cleaning. They just used some of the polish on a tight fitting patch and ran it back and forth to remove any rough spots.

I tried this on a .22 Hornet and to be honest can't tell much difference. It didn't seem to affect accuracy any, although I did shot my smallest group with this gun some time after the treatment.

I think there could be some concern about going overboard and damaging the rifling but it can't be a whole lot different than "fire lapping" a bore.

Has anyone else tried it? What do y'all think about it? (Note proper, Southern, use of the word "Y'all".) Wink

I also used Flitz on my Ruger barrel in an attempt to try to reduce copper fouling. Not sure I've found any clear cut evidence that it worked. But the Flitz really shines up the wheels on my Honda.--tr

I would not use Flitz on a bore since I think there are better products to remove copper fouling.

The best products I've found to remove copper fouling are KG-12 Big Bore Cleaner, Barnes CR-10 and Prolix. They are MUCH better than Shooters Choice. Hoppes and the Remington barrel cleaning product (I forget the name) are a joke.

To minimize copper fouling buildup, I use Prolix (the best) or Microlon Gun Juice. In my opinion, these latter two give a noticeable improvement in accuracy as well.

Oh, and I quite using bore brushes a long time ago.

The Flitz isn't intended to remove fouling but to reduce it by polishing the bore.

I've not tried Flitz, but have polished the bores on several firearms with JB Bore Paste to remove rough spots. It's used the same way you described with the Flitz. Used carefully it will polish the bore and, since it is much slower than fire-lapping, is less likely to create dimension problems and mess up your throating. It will work just fine but is slow work.

Some years ago, as a joke, my buddy gave me a very early era Dan Wesson .44 barrel he had picked up at a swap-meet for $2. It looked as if it had been rifled with a field plow and would literally strip jackets from bullets...and we don't even want to talk about what it did to lead. Just for fun I decided to see just how far I could take it with JB (OK...I was really bored!) over a period of several days and Lord only knows how many patches and complete strokes, I got it to a mirror finish. Slugging it afterward revealed that even with all of that lapping, the bore was .4305", just a bit larger than normal but still shot pretty well.
