Yesterday I had the opportunity to make a before the season pheasant hunt with some friend and thier friends. The hunt was an organised event so for the benefit of a man from Arkansas, who would not be able to stay for the pheasant opener this saturday. Our group consisted of 10 members some shooting nice double barrel shotguns and some of us with Mossbergs. I pride myself by out shooting the pretty guns with my ugly ones.
All this picture painting just to say pheasants don't require high brass 1 7/8 oz. shot shells. I was shocked to see guys pull up and shoot birds infront of others and just blast the dickens out of the birds. I suggested they let the bird get out a ways before shooting and was looked upon as an idiot.
I guess no matter how many times I think it, it always comes out true.
Hunt with friend and people you know!

Thats good advice. I have seldom been able to enjoy a hunt with someone who I have never been out with before. It seems that you want to do something and they want to do something elese. Or maybe they are not as safe when they handle their firearms as you would like. There are alot of things that can go wrong when people are not familiar with each other.

I concur. There is something called hunting etiquette!

Getting shot or shot at, is no fun at all.

I use 2-3/4" #6's for pheasants and never ever felt undergunned. Now I did jump a rooster once in some cat-tails while goose hunting (pheasant hunt was on) ... lemme tell ya #4 buck will drop a pheasant right quick
And I agree on the safety thing... I've been peppered more than a few times while pheasant hunting, morons!

Yeah, many people don't understand safety at all, they think just go and shoot and you'll be fine?
But the thing they don't understand is the projectile nature of their firearm, weather it be a pistol/revolver, rifle, or a shotgun.
While also pheasant hunting and "lightly", but nonetheless being peppered because i was on the other side of a hill, when idiots (new to our group) didn't put 2&2 together when they heard my hunting group and i start yelling. Even after talking to them and moving to a different spot (pub land) they soon thereafter ventured over to us and started up again..... but when my friend and i said ouch, this time they started laughing, and we all started shooting our shotguns in the air, near them but not to directly him anyone and they finally got the idea not to screw around after they saw black rain drops near them.
We were using 20 and 28 gauge shotguns and they had 12 ga. hi brass extra velocity shells......and from that day on, i'd never hunt with a stranger, newbie, nor someone that didn't know ethics to and mannerisms of hunting, again.

I was invited to pheasant hunt with a group once. Spent most of the day in fear. Never again. Only hunt with my dog and a friend or two at a time anymore. And with using the dog a 12 ga. isn't all that necessary anymore. Most shooting is relatively close in. A good old 20 ga. fits the bill nicely. Good discussion in this thread on safety.-tr

I had a case years ago, where a county sheriff was pheasant hunting with a young man and his dad, and the sheriff fixated on the bird, not paying attention to what was behind it. A pellet punctured the young man's eye at extreme range.
Not a happy occurrance. The kid didn't lose the sight in the eye totally, at least not before I was transferred.
SAFETY, SAFETY,SAFETY! Guns is dangerous!
One of the worst examples to come out of Hollywood...ever...was an old potboiler "Electraglide in Blue", or something like.
Typical '60s druggie/anti police crap! It showed a gunfight, with two innocent bystanders getting hit by the officer's "shoot through" ammunition. The ending was merely sickening.

It WAS 'Electroglide In Blue'... Robert Blake as a motorcycle officer. I agree with your assessment of the ending. Very violent.
There are whole forums now on the technical meaning of the word "always", as in ALWAYS keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction. We all know that "technically" that's impossible. We can never know 100 % of the time what lies in a projectiles possible path. We do need to stay safety conscious. We do need to maintain a state of awareness of our surroundings when hunting. We do need to recognize and make a decision about questionable shots with questionable backstops or safety factors.
In short, I don't want to see anyone shot (accidentally). But the Dick Chaney incidents may be a good reminder to be careful who we hunt with and around when possible.

Wow Longwalker. Your string is still alive (2005-2007). And I guess I'm one of those guys with the fancy doubles. Hmmmm. Browning BSS 12 ga 2 3/4. And to go with the rest I also use #6's on Pheasant (when I get to hunt them). Yup. Went on one of them group hunts where I only knew one other person. Never did know who's dog was who's. Sure was a lot of callin' and whistlin' goin' on. I had two dogs helpin' me and nary a one was mine (I have no dogs). People cross shootin' and turnin' around and not watchin' their muzzles (did a lot of duckin' that day). My favorite bird to hunt is moutain quail. Now there is a bird equiped with ground huggin' radar...

I shoot everything from doves to geese... with a 2 3/4" Remington shotgun. Its worked great. People that believe they have to have mag shells to shoot rabbits or pheasants obviously had a poor mentor growing up.
That said once I was hunting geese along the edge of a lake when I jumped a pheasant... whos season happened to be open at the same time. I assure you 4-Buck drops a rooster quite well LOL! Heck of a lucky hit too, only 1 pellet hit it, right under the wing and straight through the heart. Made for a great tasty dinner.

An organised days shoot here is run a bit differently to the way you describe it, but we still get people who are "careless" with their muzzle awareness, and are greedy with what they shoot. If they are dangerous then it is not unknown for them to be asked to put their gun away and stop shooting, make that told.
I use 6's for pheasant, partridge etc,
5's for ducks
4's for geese, sometimes it is magnums for the geese depends where I am. All from the same guns, a SBS AYA Yeoman, or a SBS 3" magnum Gunmark Kestrel.

It is difficult hunting with people that we don't know well. Often the type of hunting they do or something else will conflict with what we are accustomed to.
This weekend I'm going squirrel/rabbit hunting with two long time friends but there is another guy coming also...not sure what to expect. I know him personally (but never hunted or camped with him) and he is a nice guy, but I just hope and pray that none of my habits irritate him or his me.
