Wow thats pretty crazy. We had a bear attack on a scout about a week ago... it bit him through his tent on a campout about an hour drive from my house. Seems the drought here is causing them to get rather bold.
I still wouldnt want to attack one with a knife though.

That's some story. We are in the same drought as Utah, but, it's not bear attacks we are experiencing, just serial snipers. Seems we have two in the area.
Keep it coming...

Saw a program last week about Kodiak Island, Alaska where the drought killed the bears normal forage so they started going to the sounds of gunshots to claim downed deer. In the process several folks hurt or killed in the encounter with the bears.
Same would happen when normal forage is gone and bears go raiding campgrounds and garbage piles.

Just a couple weeks ago, I let my dog out to take care of business at around 2 AM. He was doing his thing when I noticed a rather large dark shadow about 40 yds out, moving my way and toward the dog. I called the dog, and thankfully he listened that time. A few seconds later after getting the dog in the house, where I should have gone, a big sow Black Bear came right over and sniffed the dogs urine on the ground maybe 10 yds from me on my uncovered back porch step. I yelled and waved my arms for the bear to get outa here. She turned about half a step then charged, teeth snapping up to 3 or 4 feet from the bottom step of the porch where I was standing. She then turned and kinda meandered off in the same direction she had come from. Not till she was back to where I had first seen her that I saw the 2 cubs. She got the last word and I went back in the house to clean up. I now carry my 357 with me any time I'm going to be out side, even when mowing the yard.
