I recently bought but have not yet used a "Blue Wonder" cold bluing kit. I watched a demonstration on the company's website and was quite impressed. I have a few older military mausers that are in need of a re-blue. It's not cheap, costing me almost $30. from Sinclair (enough for 2-3 rifles). I've recently seen some comments on the web that have been less than flattering. According to a couple guys it streaks and looks somewhat like an oil slick, blotchy I guess you could say. Has anyone here used this product? Can you share your thoughts on it with me? I've used other cold blues and have been less than thrilled with them. Thanks. Best wishes.

Cal.
My bro-in-law just reblued his .30-06 I dont remember the brand but it wasnt "blue wonder", his gun came out with some funny looking marks on it as well. I think you just kind of gotta have a talent for it. I dont think the cold blue works as well. Let us know how it turns out. I would really like to know if this is a good product. I will use it myself if it is.

I agree with knifeboy. There is not a product out there (in my opinion) that works easily the first time. I have an old Stevens/Savage 28 ga shotgun that I wanted to work over. I bought a Beechwood/Casey complete kit with bluing and stock refinishing. The stock came out super. It was easy to use and the results were professional looking. Same was not true of the blueing job, though. I followed the directions exactly, but the results looked like my youngest painted it with a black magic marker. I have no idea where I went wrong, but I would never try it again. Luckily the gun is nothing special and I just use it for partridge hunting now and again. Maybe it was just me ....I work better with wood than metal.

Hello Blaine,

My results have been similar to yours. I have 3 old mausers I've restored. The woodwork turned out beautifully. I'm quite proud of myself. However, the bluing is either too thin, too dull, too blotchy, too somethng! This stuff, Blue Wonder, was expensive, about $30. for the kit which will do 3 rifles). I saw a web demonstration video that impressed me, but it appears that may have just been to get me to buy the product.
Live and learn I guess. Best wishes.

Howdy. Cal " Ditto " same thing with me The stock came out very nice but the bluing looked like magic marker. Luckly its just a old 410. Keep me informed sounds like a lot of us are looking for a good easy to use cold blue hopefully you found one

You gotta get all the grease and oils off before a cold blue will work worth a darn. Maybe one of them spray booths for engine blocks would do the job easily. Every other method is labor intensive.

Cal,
Never used "Blue Wonder" so cannot comment. I have used many cold blue products. The only one that works for me is G96 and they have a website at www.g96.com. I have used it to cold blue screws, small parts, barrels, receivers and entire guns. The key is the metal preparation, degreasing the metal, wear rubber gloves and follow the directions to the letter. I have a U.S. 1917 sporter that I reblued with G96 a few years ago and it still looks great. When it came time to flush the blued metal with water, I placed the barreled action in the shower for a minute. This is the only cold blue product I use because it works well the first time. All the best...
Gil

Cal,

Don't open the package, return it to Sinclairs....

That stuff will never give you a good result...
