For those of you that are evacuating from the coast, I just heard a great tip. It's called the one cup tip. You put a cup of water in your freezer. Freeze it solid and then put a quarter on top of it and leave it in your freezer. That way when you come back after you've been evacuated you can tell if your food went completely bad and just refroze or if it stayed Frozen while you were gone.
If the quarter has fallen to the bottom of the cup that means all the food defrosted and you should throw it out. But if the quarter is either on the top or in the middle of the cup then your food may still be OK.
It would also be a great idea to leave this in your freezer all the time and if you lose power for any reason you will have this tip to fall back on. If you don't feel good about your food, just throw it out. The main thing is for all to be safe.

Vince, this is pretty good. Thanks for the tip.

I like it.
We seem to loose power at least twice a year for a prolonged period.
I'll do this before we go away for a few days or longer, if I'm home I have a generator.
Good idea Vince.

Thats a brilliant idea.
We have Honda 2000 generators. I modified a spare gas cap to add a extended fuel tube that I can stick in a bulk gas can. The Hondas have a fuel pump so as long as the seal between the cap and hosebarb / hose is air tight, it will suck fuel from another fuel source. Supposedly you can get roughly a weeks run time on a single 6gal gas can.

It is a good idea Vince.
I might put a coin or two on top of the ice bags I got in my freezer.
Here, I also fill my freezer with plastic bags of water and let them freeze.
I take a bag or two out when I need to put stuff into the freezer and replace the bags as I take stuff out of the freezer.
In the event of power loss, I got a lot of thermal cooling mass that keep my stuff freezing for a while.
Also they are handy whenever you want to have ice for whatever reason.
I can see the use of simple indicator with the coin.

You want to use a salty solution in this case, salt water has a lower freezing point so it when frozen, it will hold a lower overall temperature than just plain frozen water. I use frozen pop bottles with a slightly salty brine to fill in open spots in the big cooler when we go camping. Keeps things really chilled, for longer.

I used to use salted water for the ice, but after a while, I change them back to clear water. IMO if SHTF it is better if I have drinkable water that I can simply pull out of the freezer.
While there are temperature advantage for brine, I feel the usability of plain water surpass it.

I know that drinking very cold liquor will cause injury. I don't know the freezing point of 80 proof alcohol but it is a lot colder than the -10F that my freezer holds. It's cold enough to keep the ice cream rock hard!
