It goes back to registering and needing to supply the GOVERNMENT with a REASON you want a gun.

Don't "need" a reason to own a gun in Canada, nor do I support registration. I do however support Criminal checks, and atleast SOME safety testing/courses being required to own firearms.

While I think that everyone should take a safety course I do NOT think it should be mandatory as a prerequisite for ownership. That just opens the door for more restrictions, such as “proficiency tests”. Would you like to have to pass a typing test before you could express your opinions online?

You may not like it but people have a right to be armed, whether they have “safety training” or not. Accidental firearm deaths are the lowest since they started keeping records in 1903, despite having many more people and guns. It would seem that the voluntary safety programs, and a little common sense, are working just fine.

Mike,

I know I am too young to say this but I feel people are getting dumber not smarter as a whole. I have heard some things at gun shops from people around my age (17 to 30ish) that make me hope I never cross paths with them in the woods.

Proficiency tests no I do not agree with. Registrations I do not agree with ether. Streamlining some sort of safety/knowing the law lessons and avoiding dealing with the old FAC buying system (go to the store, pick out and buy the gun, go to the police station, go back to the store and pick up your gun)

This is what the Canadian Non-Restricted course teaches:

Whew,

Glad I did not have to read the whole thing. It's pretty comprehensive.

D, what does the test look like?

In my opinion if you know anything about firearms and things that are more related to safety with them your 90% of the way there to pass the test.

The test is not as hard as that book makes it seem. Its about the same as doing your written basic driving test to get your learners permit.

I am sure any of you (other then the Canadian law aspects) would pass it easily if you don't do stupid things with firearms.

The only trick question I find is that it says "You can use smokeless powder in muzzle loaders?"

"1) True"
"2) False"

Knowing what I know of the more current firearms I was going to put "true" cause the Savage muzzle loaders were designed to handle smokeless. But the test wants more "absolute" truths, in that 99.99% of all muzzle loaders out there will not safely use smoke less. Smile

What part of "...shall not be infringed" do you not understand, Big D???

Down here and in Alaska unless you are a felon or outright crazy you can own a firearm. NO test!!

Canada, as much as I like the people, can keep their socialist views and government. I will continue to fight our government for MY freedoms as written in the Constitution and Bill Of Right.

The 2nd Amendment does not state "except for felons" either and I am sure your all ok with the legal restriction for them to not own firearms.

'Mitri,
Convicted felons also lose their right to vote. I believe that if you go back in our history you will find the Supreme Court of the US set some of those precedents in 1789 when most of the folks who wrote the Constitution were still alive and well!!

Yes, on several occasions.....

I wasn't always the model citizen you see before you today....

My current position requires travel into "less-than-ideal" areas after daylight hours on occasion. Even during normal operating hours, crooks target financial institutions....

The Canadian safety course looks pretty good, I saved a copy. And I am STILL against mandatory safety training as a condition of ownership.

Anti-gun people always talk about "compromise" when discussing gun laws, etc. In the US gun owners have allowed background checks and such in the spirit of compromise. Now tell me ONE thing that the anti-gunners have offered us gun owners? The antis' idea of compromise is exactly the same as a school yard bully, "Give me your lunch money and I won't beat you up today!"

Mike,

Your very right about the Antis, perhaps, for each and every gun they ban they need to send one of their own up to Alert permanently?
