Building a 240 Weatherby Magnum...

Hey D/S I've just finished reading the whole thread and have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and looking at your .240Wby build.

Your pics are of such clarity, and so well sequenced, that I sense ( I was going to say 'understand' but that would be presumptuous on my part) the attention to detail and skill required.

Anyhow, she should be a sweet shooter. Looks good too, in a subdued non-brash kind of way...a sleeper of sorts. Shocked

D/S, no offense meant: in the muscle car days a sleeper was the simple clean lookind car that would blow the doors off the chrome-laden competition (this last bit is provided for the younger ones among us (Dimitri?) who did not get to drive 300+hp pony cars).

Now lets all pray for the rain to stop falling in OK, so we can see how this puppy prints paper.

hey ds. i was wondering what you opinion on bedding a 700 .308 was. how hard is it to do with maintaining the mag well and the little box the ammo sits in. would you just bed the lug? would be alot easier if it was just a single shot.

bed the complete action area as well as the recoil lug and about 1 inch in front of that and no more. Also, put 3 or 4 layers of masking tap on the bottom of the recoil lug. Everything else, bed solid...

Here is an accuracy report on the new 240 Weatherby Magnum...

Here are a couple of targets followed by the loads that was used...

CASE: Norma 240 Weatherby Magnum

PRIMER: CCI-200

POWDER: IMR-4350 / 51.0 gr.

BULLET: Sierra 85 gr. B.T. - H.P. Game King

VELOCITY: 3,817 fps.

CASE: Norma 240 Weatherby Magnum

PRIMER: CCI-200

POWDER: IMR-4350 / 50.5 gr.

BULLET: Hornady 87 gr. V-MAX

VELOCITY: 3,732 fps.

*********************************************************

CASE: Norma 240 Weatherby Magnum

PRIMER: CCI-200

POWDER: IMR-4350 / 52.0 gr.

BULLET: Remington 80 gr. Power Lokt Hollow Point

VELOCITY: 3,918 fps.

*********************************************************

Fireform load was as follows -

CASE: Norma 240 Weatherby Magnum

PRIMER: CCI-200

POWDER: IMR-4350 / 45.0 gr.

BULLET: Remington 80 gr. Power Lokt Hollow Point

These were the three bullets that were used to shoot the above groups. The bullet on the left is the 80 gr. Remington, center is Sierra's 85 gr. bullet and then Hornady's 87 gr. V-MAX...

Extreme spread between all rounds fired was 20 fps. or less!

Notice also that all groups were fired at 200 yards instead of 100 yards. Reason being is that most high velocity bullets of any caliber do not fully stabilize until at least the 200 yard mark, if not further....

This question came a bit late in the thread but I got to ask somebody about it.

Usually, what I heard is when chambering a new barrel, you thread them first then you ream the chamber.
Supposedly this will help in headspacing with go/nogo gauges to check the distance from the bolt to the shoulder of the cartridge.
What I saw from your work here, you ream the barrel first then you thread it..
So how do you get the headspace right?

Vince, Foreigh and Pumpkinslinger - thank you for the compliments, I appreciate it. I am quite satisfied with the way things worked out and needless to say, my wife is more than happy with her new rifle....

Gelandangan - I have never seen a gun that would fire go/no go gauges. This is something that I have no use for. Personally, I always use cases that have been full length resized with the original dies that will be used for reloading that particular cartridge...

When cutting the bolt body counterbore, I cut it to the same exact depth of the bolt body and when the barrel is screwed into the receiver, I set it up to stop .003 short of contact with the barrel. The chamber is also cut to where the case head also stops .003 short of jamming against the case head on a chambered case that has been full length resized. After the barrel is screwed into the receiver and tightened, if you put a .003 steel shim against the case head and tried to close the bolt, it will not completely close and lock down but anything less than that will allow the bolt to fully close and lock. This is the way I have been chambering and building rifles and hunting handguns for 25 years now....
