Dallan,

To be honest it was semi-joking when I said that. Razz I said it like that because some of the discriptions of duck hunting are quite how should I say "unique" from what people who do it told me. Sorry if I made anyone upset didnt mean to Sad

I want to go dove hunting though seems interesting, more so then duck hunting from blinds because your walking through the land to find them. I dont like still hunting one bit. Moving around is better Very Happy

If anything hunting for land birds seems quite interesting with a shotgun. Need to get myself a "scatter gun" though as I only have a rifled 870 as of now that can be called a "shotgun" Sad

I don't like the taste of doves, but they are some of the best practice targets that I know of...Never know which way they will turn and when...What you need to try is mountain quail...No.. Not like any other quail you ever went after. These have ground huggin' radar...Fly about 1 to 2 ft off the ground and zig-zag through the bushes...Takes a fast shooter with a 12 gage and #7 field loads.

DallanC...What happened to your Pheasant...??? You should have some of the best enviroment for them...

Look into buying an extra barrel for your 870. It is and easy off and on and much cheaper than buying another shotgun if money is an issue while you are in college.

Doves have a bit of a distinct taste but it is my absolute most favorite game meat. Just takes alot of 'em to make a meal Smile

I grew up hunting those little buzzbombers. I used to head out into the sage just at dusk as they would roost in thick sage and call to each other... it was alot easier to locate them and flush them (but as you said, really hard to then connect with LOL). Beautiful birds.

Housing has destroyed it all. Housing ruined the habitat and with housing comes NO HUNTING laws and the inevitable free roaming house cats. We had UNBELIEVABLE pheasant hunting in the early to mid 80's... Jump flocks of peasants at a time... sometimes it would take as little as 15 min to limit out on a days hunting. I had access to thousands of acres of swampy cattails and corn fields growing up... its all houses now.

A Remington barrel with chokes is about 245$ plus tax. Its 28inchs long and uses RemChokes. Smile To get a Remington with that type of barrel would only be 340$. Its only 100$ differance for the reciver/action, stock, and magazine assembly. Confused

Ok, $100 difference but you are not going through a paperwork hassel to buy another shotgun. Did you figure the paperwork costs into the $100 ? All I know about your current gun laws is that it's a hassel to buy a gun, are shotguns included? $100 worth of shells shoud last you for a few hunting trips.

Popgun,

The "laws" arnt that bad lol. I actually find it amusing about how Americans think we got it bad lol. Very Happy I think you guys got it bad. After all you need to wait for a waiting period for the backround check to pass if I'm not mistaken Confused Very Happy

Process of buying a gun (rifles shotguns and muzzleloaders) here:

1) Talk to the sales about the gun you like.
2) Look at it and get a feel for it by holding it and placing it in a "shooting posistion".
3) Fork over cash and your "Possesion and Aquision License" aka a PAL or some still call it a FAC.
4) Walk out with the rifle in hand after a few minutes for the salesman to transfer the rifle using your PAL over the phone lol.

No paper work, no backround checks, just forking over the cash and waiting for a couple of minutes lol. They do all that when you first get your license and then renew it every 5 years lol Very Happy

As for paperwork cost its FREE no store here charges for it as they inculd it in the price I guess. Smile

Good to hear that it's not as bad as I heard.
I have a CCW (Concealed Weapons Permit) and with it there is no Instant Check required. Pay and go like you. The paperwork is done for the CCW at the courthouse and does not cost me anything because I'm a retired LEO. So same same.

As for having it bad, can you have AR-15's, M1-A's, SKS, MAK's or a bolt rifle that shoots 7.62 Nato (308 WIN)?

We can have without a Restricted and Prohibited License (what most people get anyways) the M1A, SKS (Even the evil-Yugo version with the granade lancher and the bayonet need to remove the latter though for hunting) and ANY bolt action rifle. Smile Canada doesnt discrimiate agiasnt "tactical bolt actions" like the Remington M24 line or the M40 loaded in 308 they are prefectly fine. Also single shot 50 cal rifles are non-Restricted. Smile

The AR-15's and AK variants are all Restricted as are handguns so you need to do alittle more to get the license (belong to a shooting range and be a good member or be a collector and file a report about the guns you plan on collecting based on there history and the like). I plan on possibly upgrading to a Restricted license to get myself into IPSC it seems interesting. Smile

We can with a regular licence get a semi-auto 19inch barrel look alike from the AK (Its different in operation I'm told though) that doesnt have any special requirements. Its called the CZ858 -2 TACTICAL:

Quote::
The CZ 858 MKII Tactical is the only semi auto version of the famed VZ 58 that is manufactured by CESKA ZBROJOVKA, Uhersky Brod, they were the sole original manufacturer of the VZ58 of which almost one million were produced. Like the companies other products, the CZ75, 85, 97 series pistols and numerous rifles, the CZ 858-2 Tactical is built with quality, durability and craftsmanship.

Although the CZ 858 -2 Tactical looks like an AK derivative she is actually a different design, so under current Canadian Law the CZ 858 -2 Tactical with the 19 inch barrel is a NON-RESTRICTED firearm.

The AR-180B (Piston operated AR-15 design by Eugene Stoner) is also non-restricted. As are the SIG 550 special models that are semi-auto only named "Black Special" and the like. Smile The only shotguns that are "banned" as far as I know are the SPAS 12 shotguns and thouse are restricted because they are too small in lenght I belive when the stock is folded on the shotgun.

Actually on this note I should mention that the Canadian version of the SL 8 rifle by HK actually has less restictions on it then the American made one. It can even accept G36 100 round magazines unlike the single stack version that is sold in the US. Mind you limit on all semi-automatic rifles is 5 rounds that would mean 95 rounds would be capped Cool

Its not as bad as people say though and I dont mind the restrictions its actually alot like your "Class 3" for Prohibited weapons so its not too bad when it comes to the majority of firearms. And getting yourself a Resticted license just means your more into firearms and know more about them. I'm told by the Canadian Shooting Sports Federation that its not too difficult to get a Restricted so I might go for it in the future Smile

Hey Coot, I'm with you!!!!
I hunt big game, but if you want to fire me up real quick, just start talking DUCKS to me!!!
Started with dad when I was around 7, and now I'm middle aged, and am fired up more that ever.
I just bought a 12ft duck boat yesterday, to go along with my canoes etc. to hunt some marshes in the Dakotas this year.
I have not been to Manitoba for a while because of the one gun rule and other things that they are doing up there, but still manage to upset the wife from Sept to Nov.
All of my young kids live for duck hunting also.
Give me an email.
Only three months to early goose season in Minnesota!!!!!
PS My three labs in the kennel are ready to go too!!!
Eric

Boy all this talk about duck and goose hunting is starting to really make me wonder why I moved from Manitoba. Mad It makes me realize how much I really miss going out after ducks and those tempermental snows. I made many hunting friends from south of the border who came up to soothe their hunting fever by getting up 2 - 3 hours before daylight to set up decoys and then wait until the sound of that first flight of ducks or the sound of that first goose. Sad
Just came back from there for Thanksgiving and the Geese were just starting to show up. Mad Mad and then I had to leave to return to Alberta. Hoping to get hunting out here next year. Smile

Hello Canuk,

Long time sense my last post.
I am now in the middle of duck season, and boy are we having a banner year.
Great weather, and ducks all over the place.
That duck boat that I bought works great for the potholes that we hunt.

Have a great and safe hunting season.

I have done a little waterfowl hunting and enjoy it. It's fun hanging out with friends, shooting the breeze and watching the sun come up over the water esp. on the coastal waters. Those snows do a lot of damage in southern New Jersey.
