well Vince, I have an elk tag in unit 8 outside of Flagstaff, been scouting the last 2 months had 6 bulls figured out, (thick trees No Pictures, or didn't have camera with) and ready to go up Thursday, Big storm today and tomorrow snow down to 5,000 ft continueing to Tuesday.
I was ready for hunting at 6800 ft, on the edge of a wilderness area about 10-12 miles off the main roads.
Oh well plan B maybe C

What is your plan for getting the elk out after your success or are there dirt roads where you are hunting?

So I can't complain about my 3" of snow? Being an Az packrat, cold weather is not my choice. I had to pry my doors open on my truck yesterday morning, but you know, it's not all that bad here compared to you guys, and I'm not out there hunting in it either. Getting from my truck to the house is about the most I'm doin. When I first moved to Or. I lived in an old farm house (just me and my wits) with wood stove for heat only and when you work during the day things may happen.
During a nasty wind storm one night, just as I was getting home from work, a tree came down and ripped the electric power mast thingy off my house. I had a wire dangling and blowing in the wind shooting sparks all over the place, couldn't call anybody as the phone was out also, so I went 1/4mile to my nearest neighbor and used their phone to call the electric company.
They wouldn't come out unless it was an emergency because of all the other damage they had to contend with that night. Well anyway I stiffened my upper lip and enjoyed a dark cold night next to the woodstove. Had to work the next day, when I came home the toilet had froze, the well pump also froze. The fallen tree was still there with the dangling electrical wire, but they had come buy to make sure it was "safe". I had a lot of work to do and ......
A short story long......I don't like cold, wind, or trees (close to the house). Other than to kill unwanted bugs.....I really don't see a need for winter....snow is fun, but...summer here is too short.

Vince, I'm hereby willing all this years snow to you. Hope you enjoy
I've been battleing subzero temps., wind, and blowing snow for the last two days, and this morning its back to ripping again. Right now my lab will have a hard time just getting off the deck to pee, the snow drift is so high. Going to be another long, long fews days just trying to get plowed out again. |
Thanks mate...might cool things down a little for us here.

8,000'...that is higher than our highest mountain mate.
Winter here usually means I wear long sleeve t-shirts instead of short sleeve ones...and on a particularly cold night I will put on some track pants instead of just shorts.
Cheers, Vince

Just for you Vince, Friday it was 5 degrees f (-15 c) with patchy snow that was louder to walk on than dry oak leaves, only saw three antlerless elk and 35 idiots.
Saturday 11 degrees f (-11 c) three bulls at 300 yards through a pine thicket, same idiots, I thought it was illegal to drives quads where they were.
Sunday warmed up to 23 degrees (-5) and four inches of snow with visabilty about 100 yards and wind gusts to 25-30 mph saw 12 cows and calfs but only 10 idiots, then I had to pack up and come down to work, but I have Thursday off and going back up.
But I had fun.

Thanks Slots. Its pretty warm here at the moment, although we have had our coolest Spring on record...not one single day over 30*C.
Where we were camping and hunting last weekend, it got down to single figures Celsius over night...but it wasn't really that uncomfortable. A couple of beers, a nice warm fire in the PIG and a good sleeping bag in the tent I and was a happy man.
Still love to do a hunt in the snow. Hey mate...ya reckon they will ever have an open season on IDIOTS? Seems like it wouldn't go astray.
Cheers, Vince
