If you are old enough to have a 1969 Gun Digest or similar catalog of guns, you will find several models that have continued to the present time. If you look up the Consumer Price Index, which began in 1969, you will find the current CPI. Look up the 1969 prices for continuing models such as the Ruger No1, Ruger Blackhawk, Marlin 336, Remington 870 and others and then multiply the 1969 price by the current CPI.

So doing, we can see just how much a bargain current firearms are in this day and age. We have a better selection, better tolerances, better accuracy than anytime previously.

And, if you want to carry this excercise further, compare the early 1900 prices for similar firearms relative to the average wage of the day. It is a reflection on how great our economy is that many hunters and enthusiasts own not just one or two guns (considered exorbitant just a few decades ago) but many firearms. Enough so, that security considerations are increasingly important as well.

So, go buy a new gun or a used gun. You deserve it. And, following my own advice, I will attempt to do so immediately.

It depends. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) may not be as valid a measurement tool as the Producer Price Index (PPI). However, you make an interesting point. The analysis does not hold up as well when one considers firearms such as the AR-15 or an M1A which have increased quite a bit since 1969. I agree with your premise about buying more guns. I try to do my part. Take care...
