I got a call at work yesterday afternoon from my son John. He said that about 3000 geese had landed in the field where he and my nephew has a spread set up and if I wanted to kill a goose, I should clock out and get home…..So I did.
When I got there about 35 minutes later, the sky was boiling with geese hopping from gravel pit lakes to the surrounding fields. I quickly donned my shadow grass camo and headed for the spread. As I walked the quarter mile to the spread, several hundred of the greater Canadians exited the corn stubble. John had limited out with my nephew and some friends earlier in the day so he was “guiding” the old man. When I reached the laydown blind there were several geese walking in the spread and I intended to let them stay but when one got up and flew right at me, I had to take it. Goose #1 before I even got in the blind or blew the old Olt flute once! I got in the blind and we immediately called and flagged in two large groups that were trying to decide if they liked our decoys or the hundred of real geese in the field about 300 yards west of us. As they were working around and looking us over, a pair came in on a mission from the northwest. I put my call down and picked up my Remington and let John work the flag and his Mann call. They came around and turned into the south west wind then started to back pedal down to the spread with their feet out. They were headed right into my lap! I swung the 870 up and took the bigger of the two. It would have been an easy double if I had not already taken a bird. It took more time to walk to the truck than it did to get my limit of two geese!
I hope the warming temperatures do not push the geese away this weekend! I would love to get into more action like that!

Skunked on Saturday --- killed out in less than an hour today!:) Geese are moving every where around here. The mud is killing me though. I cannot get to the spots I want to because it is so sloppy I would tear it up getting in there.
We got tired of dragging blinds and decoys out in the ankle deep muck of the chisled corn fileds so we set six bigfeet about 20 yards from the edge a rail road right of way that runs between two fields that have been holding geese during the day. We just bellyed down in the tall grass on the slope of the berm by the tracks and blazed on them as they hopped from the north field to the south field. I killed on the right way by calling it in and getting it to commit and finished it in my face, the other one..... I got a little carried away and came up on a goose that had flared on final approach about 40 yards out and 20 yards up. I played the wind and dropped him clean with the 3 1/2 BB's. I do not like to make the 60 yard shots but it is nice to know I can if I need to...
