I enjoy varmint calling for days at a time and, in Arizona, that gets you into some excellent calling country. My buddy, Al, and I headed to the high country around Alpine, AZ in areas of +8,000' elevation. At night the bugling of bull elk fills the crisp and clean air and, by day, the calling is superb.
No moon helps and pushes the feeding and hunting cycle later into the mornings and earlier in the evenings. I prefer hand calls and my buddy, who has never called varmints, was amazed at some of our results. So was I. These high country coyotes were suseptible to a range of calls and came in fast and hard.
We had two days of pure calling and had 18 coyotes respond to the call. Of those we managed to send 11 to coyote heaven. But, the surprise was a lone bobcat that couldn't decide whether to come closer or not. The 220 Swift solved the problem at 230yards. It will be a nice addition to the collection, although, I still need more practice at tube skinning.
It promises to be an excellent year for calling. We have set aside another three days late this month.
I wish you all as much field time as possible and the best of luck in reducing the numbers of coyotes in your area.
