Hope you get better Les.
Typing is not so much a challenge nowadays if you have a good Voice Recognition software, or a loving wife Smile
Hi Dee.. thanks for typing for Lester.

OTOH, your daily pain is not something that can be solved easily.

Ok, I have had two surgeries on my neck.
The first was to cure the lossof feeling in my thumb and first two fingers of my right hand.
The second was to fix the loss of use of my right lung.
They cut me open and then chiseled away part of the bone that was putting pressure on the nerves in both operations. The first operation was a total succcess. After the second operation I lost the use of my right arm for about six weeks after the surgery (I think they hit a nerve during the operation but wouldn't admit it) but I got at least partial use of my right lung out of it in "record time" 15 weeks.
I still have some pain - less as time goes on and I am now going to start building the muscles in my back, legs and arms so I can do stupid things without hurting myself.

I am not recommending surgery for you but it did work for me and well worth the time and pain of recovery for me.
I just got back into town from a trip of 290 miles in a car and I feel pretty good - which is amazing!
I have an appointment with my new doctor (new home, city and now doctor) for November 9th and he is a DO (an md who specializes in the skeletal system much like a chiropractor but without the whole gimicky thing) and I am hoping that he canhelp me with the proces of strengthening my back.
I did not have any fused discs in my operations and as I recall in our conversations that was a last ditch thing and it seems to be progressive - once you start fusing discs you continue to do that untill you no longer have a spine - just a rigid bone.
As a general rule I found information that back surgery has a 50% chance of making no difference, a 30% chance of making it worse, a 10% chance of being better and a 10% chance of 100% recovery. Now those statistics include all types of back surgeries and the surgeries on the neck have a higher success rate. A lot of it depends on your mindset as well - if you are positive enough to expect and work toward total recovery your chances are much better. It also takes a good surgeon to have the best outcome.
My surgeon is known for his cranial vascular surgery and is one of the best in that field but my surgery was different enough that I wish I had had another doctor to work with. That just wasn't an option for me because he was the only neuro-surgeon working at the hospital. I didn't, and still don't trust him to do the work but it turned out well in spite of that.
Do what you can to get better without surgery and if it becomes a necessity then find the best doctor you can and be sure to express your concerns and get his cooperation as best you can.

I hope you don'y need to get the surgery but if it degrades like my neck did and becomes a matter of being able to live rather than just survive then get the surgery.
