Kids find them anyway....
I did when I was growing up. I raised my kids with guns all over the house. Anytime they wanted to handle them, I stopped what I was doing and showed them how to check to make sure they were unloaded (they never were) and how to clear them. Then they could handle them with the same caution as always: All guns are loaded - never point them at anything you don't want to destroy.
After a few times it was just another tool or piece of furniture - no mystery or mystique to them. The alcohol had to be kept out because of the (now ex-) wife. She was (is) an addict and alcoholic so she kept it hidden most of the time. when she was out for a day or so, I always knew... she was a raving b, er, maniac. after three or four days she would settle down and then she would start taking pain killers and or drinking again.
My current wife is a completely different sort - she has an addiction to me.
