Maybe fencing off the ranges and putting in place some "solid" security arrangements might be the saviour of these ranges...just means that someone will have to be there to control proceedings when they are open.

Put up some covert surveillance cameras as well to deter the rubbish dumpers and those that decide to cut their way in to the range.

I am too a "brass rat" but only for the 22 cases..
(I sweep them up after weekly matches from the range floor, collect and sell them to the scrap yard)
It is very seldom to find reloadable centerfire cases here in the range.
NSW police used to use our range for training, and they use 40 cal and theres a lot of once fired brass around after they left ,
but nowadays, we in Oz are so tight that even the police reloads their practice rounds!!

Vince...The whole idea of these ranges on federal land is that the land belongs to the people and the government holds it in trust . We, the people, are supposed to police ourselves on these "FREE" (as in "no cost") shooting ranges. If you start putting up cameras and fencing them in and hiring security people then the ranges are no longer free to ALL the people.

We have to clean up after ourselves and in sure other do the same. OR...We loose the privilege of using them.

id like to volunteer to hide out in the bushes w/ Kabong....and when some scumbag trashes the place they get a 200gr "smarten up" pill in the rump. itll only sting for a milisecond.

bushy hit it on the head. we've always had issues with scum but the more the liberal justice system takes hold and keeps these idiots on the street or in the country the faster this stuff gets shut down. its really bad now. you simply cant have open public lands anymore here or it will be scooped up and claimed by thugs and the police wont do jack about it, nor will USFS LEO, because of the PC world we now live in. so, we close it off and rip the roads so their honda civic with the whale tails and fart can mufflers cant get in there.... as long as we tolerate scum and their activities then we have no one to blame but ourselves when it all goes to hell and never comes back. i know of some places up north one can still do his thing because scum are not tollerated and things get handled.

you cant fix stupid but you can regulate it through interollerance.

The last time I visited the "dead horse" shooting place outside of Albuquerque it was littered with shot up TV's, fridges, cans, bottles, glass - you name it, the eejits had shot it & left it.
Four years ago it was rare to find more than the odd piece of .22lr brass there.

You use a 36gr VG loaded lighter than sub sonic so that the spash is just a couple of inches deep.
Gives them the lesson each and every day they draw a breath.

Interesting day at the range, I was trying out some new loads for the 30/30 and since it was hot here, the only other people here was 2 others which I presume were boyfriend and girlfriend. I took a break and walked back to the car to get some ice water and walking back to the range I seen the guy shooting lay down his rifle on the bench only to see the rifle fire and clock him in the lower stomach area with the butt-stock.

Apparently from what he told me, this was his first time reloading and he fired 6 shots out of his 300 win mag which I heard and the 7th shot didn't go off. So instead of keeping the muzzle pointed downrange, and counting to 30secs like I do, he lays the rifle on the table and boom, it went off and clocked him in the stomach area , I knew he was hurt because he was bleeding down there and his gf called 911 to bring him to the hospital. Hopefully he will be ok,

I'm guessing these kids were 20 maybe 22 years old and never looked any safety rules regarding shooting or reloading.

OW OW OW OUCHIES not good.

The butt hit him in the stomach area, yet he was bleeding...wow...some recoil, especially if he had a recoil pad on the butt. Guess what he won't be doing for a day or two.
