2 inch groups are about 1 1/2" too big for me so take that into account with my reply.

I will bet you have checked the action screws, scope screws, and muzzle crown so we will go from there.

If this is your only magnum then it might be that the recoil and/or muzzle blast is affecting your shooting. Put up at least two targets and shoot with two guns. Take a shot with the magnum and then leave the action open as you shoot one shot with the other rifle on the second target. If the groups don't close up then try reducing your loads while keeping it an accurate load. You can usually find more than one accurate load as you go up and down through the charges of powder.

Keep the brass within 2.5 grains of one another. That will keep pressures and velocities closer together. If you aren't already try neck sizing or pertial neck sizing to make your cases fit the chamber better.

If you are using double base powders (and you should be) try throwing your charges rather than weighing them individually. I can't explain it but when I weigh charges with double base powders the groups are not as accurate.

Check the fit between your stock and barrel. If you have a heavy barrel it might shoot better with no contact between them. If it is a light barrel it might shoot better with some contact at the end of the forestock. You can experiment with paper to change the the amount of tension while making sure that there is only one contact point.

A good bedding job may be necessary but usually you can get decent groups just freefloating the barrel or taking most of the tension of the forearm contact point and then adjust it with paper shims.

Try putting a scope from one of your other rifle on it and see if the groups close up. A bad scope usually opens groups up more than you have but it may be worth a try.

You may have a bad barrel but that would be a last assumption for me.

Clean the barrel after every magazine unloading, the thing burns ALOT of powder and pushes a 30 caliber bullet at high speed with high chamber pressures compared to standard rounds (all factory loadings are at 60,000 PSI or above compared to lets say the 300 Win Mag where factory loads start at 50,000 PSI). Smile

Just like Remington advertised it at 20% more speed and energy then a 300 Win Mag remember there is also 20% more recoil. So maybe slip on a additional recoil pad on your shoulder. Smile

Clean? After EVERY magazine full?

That's like....every three rounds.

That's absurd, and silly.........

Not really Wildswalker,

My standard caliber (non-magnum) rifles get cleaned after 2 magazines go through them at the range (thats 10 rounds for my semi-automatics). Magnums get cleaned after each and every magazine. And shotguns get cleaned after about 15-20 rounds. Rim-Fire's get cleaned after 5 magazines or so (50 rounds).

All of them get field stripped and cleaned out completely after a day at the range or out in the bush (so bone dry, no dirt, oil or grease left on them) then reoiled and regreased. Smile

Mind you I'm told I shouldn't field strip my rifles that much. Causes additional wear and tear. So I may just field strip them after 500 rounds or so for the standard calibers (2-3 range sessions). Confused

Well consider this, it takes less then 5 minutes to shoot 10 rounds, of aimed controlled fire, takes under 10 minutes to clean out a bore, that means 4 strings every hour, which means in a 5 hour shooting range session thats 20 strings, or 200 rounds. Smile

Ok for my 3,000th post I'll tell you what my secret bore cleaner is.

I've been pleased with the Hoppes No.9 forumal (they should really make a long lasting version of if as women's purfume, but thats another story).

But decided to go with Hoppes Elite last time I went out and purchased gun cleaner, and I am sticking to it! Very Happy

Just for fun this is how I clean a bore:

1) Attach the patch holder (with a patch) to the cleaning rod and soak a patch with Hoppes Elite so its dripping of the stuff almost.
2) Soak the bore with the patch.
3) Let it sit for 3-5 minutes.
4) Using a wire brush, brush the bore 10 times.
5) Run 2 dry patches through the bore to clean out the Hoppes.

Then back to shooting. Smile

Dimitri

Were I bored outta my skull on the worst day of weather in history I'd not consider scrubbing bores "just for fun".......

Sh***y bores foul much and are obvious quick outta the gate, regardless of chambering.

I tend to cull such fast as those attributes interest me none......

A good bore will shoot "dirty" for a long time and that much is just as obvious, regardless of chambering.

Chamber pressure voodoo means nada zilch to a slick tube......

There be a Barrel Procurement Lesson there, in that...you can thank me later.

Considering EACH and EVERY case of the 300RUM burns about double the powder of the 308Win each shot using the same 150gr bullet. And considering for the bigger magnums barrel life is rated at about 500 rounds or so compared to a standard caliber of 3,000 rounds before accuracy degrades because of barrel wear and tear cause of the higher pressures and the excessive amounts of powder burned in the bore. You can sure bet it needs more cleaning.

I know guys who don't consider it ready to shoot until three rounds have gone downrange.

Off Topic Sorry.

Hey 'Mitri....I'm with Wildswalker, chambered221 and hunterjoe21 on this.

I reckon that you are over cleaning mate. As for field stripping as often as you do...that is akin to doing a major service on your car every 500 miles or so....a waste of time, effort and resources....in effect over servicing. I agree with whoever told you that it causes extra (excessive) wear and tear on your firearm.

I haven't cleaned my rimfire in maybe 2 years...about 500 rounds or so... and it shoots excellent. I clean my centrefires, shotgun included, at the end of every range session or hunt, but I don't scrub them out...just a patch with a little Sweets, then clean patches until they show no colour...usually about 3 more..a little oil, then thats it. I do however clean the centrefires (dry them out) every night when out hunting if it has been raining. This is only to ensure no rusting. Sometimes I will use that product that Bushy hates with a vengeance...WD40 or similar...if I have been caught in a heavy downpour and I want to make sure that all of the moisture is out from under the action etc.

Cheers, Vince

The amount of propellant burned has little to no effect on the need to clean a barrel, at least in modern smokeless loads. Copper fouling from bullet jacket material left behind is the main reason periodic cleaning is neccessary. This is worsened by higher velocity, a less than smooth bore, or with certain bullets. Back when I did a lot of groundhog hunting in PA, I would hunt a whole summer with my .243 firing 70 grainers at 3400 FPS without giving it a serious cleaning with no noticeable loss of accuracy. I would hunt daily, fire maybe 300 rounds through the season, and maybe run a patch through bore if I was out in the rain. I would give it a serious cleaning at the end of the season. This rifle is still very accurate. I dont see why a 300 RUM throwing bullets at 3300 FPS would require any more cleaning than the .243. The big magnums do tend to erode throats faster than standard calibers but cleaning will not change that.
