Vince. Horses have the same problem. I use Bickmore Gall Salve on my dogs and horses. Works on all non-life threatening cuts and bites.

Along with the salve and betadine solution pretty much makes up my animal first aid.

Betadine is great stuff mate, my daughter keeps a 500ml bottle in her tack box for whenever it's needed. She had a horse about 15 yrs ago who stood on a piece of corrugated iron and took the outside butt of a heel off, cutting four arteries. More blood than I'd seen in a long time.

I was holding the leg as it I was shoeing the horse while the vet was trying to clamp off the arteries. Of course it was rather painful for the horse, and with the blood everything was slippery. Anyway the horse pulled back and cocked it's leg and let go. I copped the full force on the side of my shin. I was surrounded by young girls at the pony club so I said a lot if things like ouch, ow, goodness me and that hurt...well I couldn't swear. Anyway we had to treat the wound with some spray the vet gave us as well as antibiotic injections and Betadine as well as keep a boot on the hoof.

Magic stuff iodine.
