Well, I suspect there is some dog or wolf in it somewhere.

I've heard some stories about some VERY big coyotes in Ohio as well. In fact, the farmer who farms our land said he has seen some so big in the course of his work that at first they can almost be mistaken as deer.

Wow, 87 pounds, most of what I see around here would be 35 to 40 skiny things.

Yes they have been genetically tested and have Eastern Wolf genes. The interesting fact is that Newfoundland Coyotes are being taken that exceed the normal weight range and shoulder height of the Eastern Wolf. This has led some to suggest that, even in the short 25 years they have been on the island (40-50 generations), that they are starting to differentiate through natural selection to a larger variety. While no one has proven the existence of Gray/Timber wolf genes in these animals, some people are suggesting that some of the animals that have made it to the island have this in their pedigree. Since Coyote females select the largest male to mate with, if they have a choice, and larger males are able to drive off smaller ones, we may be seeing evolution in action. In any event I can't wait to get the time to do some hunting.

The face on that "coyote" looks more wolf than coyote to me.

There is definitely something other than coyote in that beastie. As Grumps said...wolf. I've never seen a 'yote...but I have seen a Canadian Timber Wolf, and this guy has a distinct look of wolf about him...size and shape of his head, his eyes, even the "look" on his face.

It will be interesting to see exactly what breeds are in him...if they ever put it out.

wow that is a big animal, from what you guys have shown me in other threads the coyote and the wolf do interbreed but I guess they live different lifestyles if yotes are not a pack animal? maybe it was eating monsalto food!!!

Coyotes may not pack all year long-but where I was raised in eastern oregon we always saw packs in the winter time!Probably improves their averages for the hunt!Also coyotes and wolves may "interbreed" at certain areas where the wolves are not huge like these canadian imports that the us govt shoved down our throats-thankfully the larger breed wolves consider our coyotes as food or interlopers and just kill them for sport. Surprised

Okay the end is near and the beasts are getting out. Check out this one in New Brunswick last week. They haven't seen a wolf since 1876. We still haven't heard the DNA results for our big one. Everyone is upping the size of their bullets for their coyote rifles. We are held to .25 and smaller center fire.

well if you start with the 25/06 or .243 you wont have much to worry about, and I would back my .223 against any critter of that type any day or night of the week.

MacD-what is canadas reasoning for limiting the caliber for varmints?Are they afraid that if it were shot with a 338winmag that it would be too dead?Or is this some kind of contrived public safety issue-like the bullet would exit and kill someone five counties away?FWIW-a 223 with a ss109 bullet will also"overpenetrate,as will some of my handloaded 223s with "hunting type"lead tipped bullets!I just don't understand some of these commonwealth laws. Confused

sometimes real smart ones like to calculate in energy and take their believes into wisdom... so we have a maximum (4 mm) for the diameter of shot that can be used for hunting and minumum diameters and energy for bullets: minimum 5.6 mm for rabbits, foxes and doves, minimum 5.6 mm AND minimum 850 Joules at 100 m for roedeer, minimum 6.5 mm and 2200 Joules at 100 m for the bigger game.
So they require minimum energies but NOBODY talks about energy-transfert. A hypersupersonic needle doesn't hurt as much as a soft lead ball at the speed of sound...

so we are allowed to shoot a fox, a rabbit or a dove with a .375 H&H or a .50 BMG, but not with some shiny .17 nor with a .22 LR (no rimfire allowed)
and I don't even do any effords anymore to try understand these rules. In my opinion they are just made to ennoy hunters.
