The Hornady 7th edition manual lists loads based in their 24" 1 in 10 twist test barrel (in a Rem 700). They used Winchester WLR primers. Their listings for 117 gr bullets (C.O.L. 3.170" for the BTSP):

RL-22 min load 48.1 gr (2700 fps) to MAX load 56.1 gr (3100 fps) with a 54.1 gr charge giving 3000 fps.

H4831 min 49.3 gr (2700 fps) to MAX 54.7 gr (3000 fps) with a 52.9 gr charge giving 2900 fps.

The comments in the text:
In our testing, the powders that performed the best with the 25-06 Remington were RL-22 and IMR 4831. These slower burning powders perform best when loaded in the region ranging between 90% of maximum to maximum.

I would try RL-22 powder and use the OCW method to determine what your rifle likes for a powder charge.

Hope this helps.

here is some additional load data from the hunternut database.

huntingnut.com/index.p...dbid=13488

Have you tried changing bullet seating depth? Before I changed too much regarding your loads, I would give the rifle a thorough checkout; headspace, action to stock interface, scope & mounts, etc.

Got a old hunting buddy that is a complete 25-06 fanatic !!!

If it won't shoot a 100gr. Sierra BT or Nosler B-Tip with IMR4831 he would tell you something is wrong with the gun !!!

I had a Rem 700 in .308 that I could not get to shoot consistently. Tried several bullets and loads, rebedding the stock, etc. Then one day at the range, I just said that was it. I wasn't going to shoot one more round out of it. Sorry I sold it, I should have put a new barrel on it in .260 or 7mm-08 and had a good 1000 yard rifle.

Hope you find a good load for your new gun. Keep us posted.

great news, RNH! It is rewarding when things come together like this. Much better than the opposite. Did you get any velocities?

I once had a 25-06 that wouldn't shoot anything but sierra 75's over 52g 760 this doesn't sound like anything but in that rifle it went under .25" all the time

Well done Redneck H. I think the 25.06 tends to be a much forgotten and maybe a little maligned calibre...but it does a great job in the paddock.

Cheers, Vince

Vince,
Wanna come on over and sweet talk mine? bring beer and a hammer.
Its doing the shotgun thing for 5 to 10 shots 1.5 to 3" @ 100 m, gets its act together around 15 shots down to .6" for 5 or so shots and then goes back to shotgunning.
Frustration is now my middle name, so bad in fact I've purchased a .308.
2 gunsmiths cant find anything wrong with the barrel apart from expected wear and cant fault the bedding. New scope new mounts trigger massaged etc.
It does this with 3 different weights of projectiles and 2 different powders and factory rounds as well.
ATM I just shoot it until it goes where I want it on a cold barrel and just run a oiled patch through it, if it gets a through cleaning it shotguns for 15 rds. It thinks its a bloody rimfire......
The plan is to rebarrel it probably to 25/06 as I have all the cases and dies for it.
Just got to decide on Allen Swan or MAB for the barrel work.
The .308 is doing OK after 40 rds, getting around 1.2" with factory ammo and no bedding.

sounds like a right pain in the butt.
Im pleased you have a solution and think how much fun you can have once its been rebarrelled you can take the old barrel for a nice drag behind the car/truck down to the local engineering workshop and use the bandsaw to slice the sucker into 1/2" long sections and then get the gas out and blast the sections till a pile of moulton slag is all that remains. you could wait till it cools and find some other torture to put it to maybe chuck it in the ocean so it can SLOWLY corrode away. that should fix it good and proper, if you take the new barrel along and make it watch its sure to be a good shooter for you.
