Hauken, when you shoot at game up in the trees, how do you know you don't make another hit when the bullet is near ground level again? And second question: why don't they use dogs to get those birds? I thouhgt you have to use a silencer on your guns to protects the dogs hearing (and it's difficult to cover their ears and still have them under control). I see the rifle, I see the silencer, but I don't see dogs...

Aloysius make a very valid point your field of fire/range the projectile goes AFTER going through tree/grouse must be considerable you will have to be very carefull of your firing zone, a frajile varmit projectile would be ALITTLE safer as it SHOULD break up if hitting something.

When hunting game up in the trees our hunting grounds are miles away from houses/roads. In any case you never fire your weapon in any direction without knowing whats in that direction.
Dogs are often used in the period aug-nov. And both rifles and shotguns are used. But you just cant use a dog when you got 1-2 meters of snow and its -20 to -30 degrees celsius.
Personally i dont hunt with dogs. So the silencer is for my own benefit.

I have never experienced hearing a firearm that was silenced firing a projectile above the speed of sound, what does the sonic boom sound like?

the gaf on suppressors say most small capacity rounds like .223 or 7.62x39 sound like a std .22 rimfire and the large capacity .270 ,7mm mag etc sound like a .22 magnum. the recoil reduction is also said to be 30-40% aswell!!!

They make a loud snapping/cracking sound as the projectile goes over your head..........

I have no idea what a supersonic centrefire round shot with a silencer sounds like, I would assume that it would be similar to a supersonic rimfire, with the perpetual echo type sound.

How does that work?
Does the suppressor lower the muzzle velocity?
I would have thought that if the muzzle velocity and projectile weight was the same as an unsilenced firearm that Newtons 3rd law would give the same amount of recoil.
Or is it just a percieved benefit as the boom isnt as loud?

Recoil is produced by the mass going out the front end which is composed of the bullet and propellant. On my .270, a 130gr bullet is pushed by 56 grains of powder. Even though its converted to gas, it still has mass. Supposed there is some propulsion forces from the hot gas, too. Divert the gas and achieve a recoil reduction.

Having spent some time as an Infantryman I know of what you are speaking, however those were neither silenced nor muzzles pointed away. Thus we get back to the starting point supersonic+centerfire+pointed downrange.

Wow! What a pic!

I have two Marlin 1895s, one ported and one not. The porting helps with the kick but seems louder. A little dazzling in low light too!
