The Netherlands, where six per cent of the population is now Muslim, is scrapping multiculturalism:

The Dutch government says it will abandon the long-standing model of multiculturalism that has encouraged Muslim immigrants to create a parallel society within the Netherlands.

A new integration bill, which Dutch Interior Minister Piet Hein Donner presented to parliament on June 16, reads: "The government shares the social dissatisfaction over the multicultural society model and plans to shift priority to the values of the Dutch people.

In the new integration system, the values of the Dutch society play a central role.

With this change, the government steps away from the model of a multicultural society."

The letter continues: "A more obligatory integration is justified because the government also demands that from its own citizens. It is necessary because otherwise the society gradually grows apart and eventually no one feels at home anymore in the Netherlands..."

The new integration policy will place more demands on immigrants. For example, immigrants will be required to learn the Dutch language, and the government will take a tougher approach to immigrants who ignore Dutch values or disobey Dutch law.

The government will also stop offering special subsidies for Muslim immigrants because, according to Donner, "it is not the government's job to integrate immigrants."

The government will introduce new legislation that outlaws forced marriages and will also impose tougher measures against Muslim immigrants who lower their chances of employment by the way they dress.

More specifically, the government will impose a ban on face-covering Islamic burqas as of January 1, 2013.

Holland has done that whole liberal thing, and realised - maybe too late - that creating a nation of tribes will kill the nation itself.

I bet there are more "westernized" Muslims in Canada and in the US then all of Europe combined.

Thing is, while in some European countries, with multiculturalism or not, the need to "retain" your cultural identity is strong, as you are judged by it on a day to day basis. Where as in places like Toronto, where half the population was born outside of Canada, from all over the world, its more easier to relax tradition (for the most part) especially for the younger immigrants and first generation Canadians, because your on a day to day basis surrounded by not 2 or 3 different cultures but dozens.

I find, when going out to bars or restaurants, no matter what is "sinful" in the religion or belief system of the people around me, most of them enjoy anything they wish. As long as their more traditional family members don't find out. Very Happy

It's pretty much thge same over here 'Mitri. Biggest problem we have is the Muslims...mainly Lebanese...have not let go of their old prejudices and beliefs. They still "maintain" the feuds from centuries ago...and have bought them to Australia and pass them on to their children, who in turn continue them...and they still have scant respect for women (gang rapes and the indignation of the Muslim men when caught show this) and the furore when the subject of burqas' and the problems associated with identification etc come up.

I don't have a problem with people following the teachings of Islam and the Kuran...but let them do it in their own country...in the Middle East...and not in mine.

It is good they are recognizing this, hopefully before it gets out of hand like it has in France. We can't let this happen in our countries.

I got to be fair, its not centuries ago with the Lebanese, but instead a couple of decades ago, their "little" civil war only ended in 1990, and not only was it split on religious beliefs, but also individual religious sects, so even Lebanese Christians don't get along with other Lebanese Christians today.

But take Greeks and Turks, they still hate each other in their respective home countries, but I know very few of either side who were born here that honestly care about it. With time anything can be forgotten.

Personally I am a fan of the melting pot theory of immigration over the multicultural one. But saying that isn't as popular as you'd think in Canada right now.

A belief I have held since highschool is that all a country needs to get rid of race/religion/tribal/colour based descrimination is a simple form/contract that is binding on the signer.
are you a Kiwi or are immagrant/other nationality ?
If you answer a Kiwi you get full benifits from the countrys resources
If you answer not you get diddly squat.
it works to my mind for anywhere either you belong to a country and abide by its rules or piss off and stand on your own grubby feet cause I dont wont to support you.

Elvis, I like the way you think! I am an American, not an Irish/German/Scottish/English/etc.-American. A favorite moment of mine was when a co-worker from Niger was complaining about the Mexicans who wouldn't learn English or make any effort to become part of the AMERICAN society.

Im on board with Elvis. As a KIWI not Irish, Russian, Scottish and English and probably a few others I'm not aware of. Mongrel Kiwi to the bone!
We have enough problems with Maori thinking they were hard done by let alone all the other immigrants climbing in.

Some politician here got in the shit for saying Maori went from Stone age to Space age in 150 years and haven't adjusted....no shit sherlock! but he got crucified for saying so.

I love my country but I want it to remain my country and not some sub state of Mogidishu or Johannesburg or wherever. Come here, live by our rules and societal norms. If you don't like it "Cough a long long way" ie Far Cough!
