I must confess for I too have sinned
shooting bunnies all night long and taking thier carcasses only for dog tucker 3-400 in a night. I never got out on search n destroy those boys shoot up to 1600 a night. why...
7 bunnies = 1 sheep eat the same amount of grass.
they were introduced and like most things in NZ they multiplied far beyond what was expected. could say the same about certain other cultural groups too...

This is a great discussion on the whole event and the elements of what actually is going on. My hats off to Dallan and Jim and Sue for rounding out this discussion.
I know from my job that invasive species are a problem everywhere in North America and now South America. I know that people here in Saskatchewan around the central part of the province are annually pissed at the geese especially the snow geese when they come down from the north. They remind me of my mom putting on the white table cloth on the dinning table for Sunday supper. The exception is that the geese are lifting off the fields for miles and tens of miles at one time. It is an absolutely beautiful sight to behold. These are natural populations but when you get invasive species like the ECD in Utah or the white wings in Argentina that’s a different story.
Actually the most distructive invasive species in North America is ...... DSC domestic shorthaired cat. It kills more than ALL of the other invasive species combined. Wouldn't think it would you.

ITD...ANY cat, long hair, short hair, no hair (which is how they end up after I get to them) create havoc in pretty much any ecosystem. There is no feral animal that is worse.
Out here in Australia, our small native wildlife has been absolutely decimated by domestic cats gone feral...and some of those feral cats are huge.
I have a mate, who was the Sniper Supervisor at one of our Battalions, take his Snipers out to one of our National Parks some years back...they shot over 600 feral cats in a week. A very good effort given that a feral cat is probably the most wily critter in the bush.
Cheers, Vince

those feral cats sure do grow big. I shot 3 one night with a .22magnum now the weird thing was lions are supposed to be the only cats that pack hunt, nobody had told these 3 moggies they were all stalking 2 bunnies from different directions at the same time, they had them surrounded. I got 2 strait off and the 3rd half an hour later. they were about 75mm/3"between the ears and about 3kg/8-10lbs each. they would have easily taken a lamb down.

some lady by me feeds feral cats everyday on the point. we had some nice birds and such in the area. now the area smells like cat piss and there is nothing living there but nasty looking cats. all the tree huggers think this idiot is a saint but as usual they are clueless to the damage to habitat and wildlife this moron is doing. the lady dumps 10# of food on the grounds everynight. ive been hissed at and swiped at going down the trail to the break to go surf by these morbid ferals. one tin of 8gr premier HP and my raven break-barrel is all i need to restore balance to that area. it used to be a nice spot now its a wasteland of cat trails, urine, feces and infected vermin. cats are as bad or wrose than dogs in all cases as they can scale almost anything.

This discussion is getting back to my thought some time back about hunting feral cats with a varmint call and the .22 Hornet. I still want to give that a try.

Iv'e had some run ins's with some out here in LaLa Land. Whipping along on my dirt bike on one of the very few OHV trails we have left and come up on 50 hikers. They only have 50 million other trails to hike on. We have one. It starts to get mouthy. I remind the lead hippie I'm onna a 225# motor bike, wearing 25# of armor, the cell phone on his ski pole (why do people hike with ski poles??? God that looks stupid!!!) don't work here and if he don't move so we can get by we'll contact the Ranger at the top....after a good ol' fashioned you-know-what.
I ratted them out anyways. Ranger posted warnings (yellow envelope) on their cars in the staging area. One got a cite (red envolope) for repeat offence. Hehehehe- 250$ and a tounge lashing from a Federal Magistrate.
Beleive it or not there are still a few normal people here that don't put up with all that hippie liberal crap. It gives me hope. So much so I volunteered for over 10 years every single weekend doing back-country alpine search and rescue on my bike. There's still a few hard-core Sportsmen here. Few and far between and the weenies are indeed taking over but...at least I know where to go for a respite from all the limp-wristed lunacy here.
