one of the cutest 7x57's I have ever laid eye's on was a SWEDISH mauser that had a stock that looked like honey and molasses stired once. It didn't hurt that it was in one of my favorite config's kinda light with a front site and receiver rear. it wasn't quite as european in the lines as I like but would have done. What niche in your calibers do you have room for it seems like by now I have heard you talk about a .243, .30"06, 7.5x55, .270? so it seems like you have rifles that will carry some distance. how about a .35 Remington I love .35's and have considered this project myself several times the only thing I haven't tried is the case feed from the mag because the "lips" might be too far apart as the 6.5 is slightly fatter and the .35 is slightly more so skinnier. also the extractor would have to be changed out for a yugo 48 extractor so as to gain some "grab" length as the rim is smaller a new in the box would be best so it wouldn't be fit yet but I don't know where to get that. if I were doing it I would just weld it up and re-shape it. Then there is the .257 Roberts that probably wouldn't get hard at all probably work without any mods. there are also a bunch of wildcats but I was keeping it tame for ya. I dunno what do you want to do, got any thing ya been hunching for? O.B.T.W. BUSHY has plenty of time for coffee drinking and mule petting. I drove by your place on the way to Gainesville before dawn awhile back and your chimney was smoking good, your place looked really good on the hillside with the fog hangin down like cigar smoke in a poker den.

the hornady 110grn hpfb are a plurry explosive round in .270 they blow a 2 litre sized hole in wallaby sized animals lots of bruizing and geling.
they may work better at slower velocities I had them going somewhere over 3000fps. they should be GREAT cyote medicine...

OMG I didn't notice your post earlier, sorry! Actually today I won an auction on GunBroker and got a nice 98 Mauser action. According to the seller it was from Kimber. It has the bolt cut, contoured and chromed and is tapped for Warne mounts. All for $200 (not bad eh?) Just needs a better trigger.

The other action the Sweedish I wasn't successful with my bidding. Well actually I always liked the 8mm Mauser and I really want to make a 8mm rifle. Don't know what sort of configuration tho. and I really want a quality barrel too. I found a guy near here that does an excellent job at truing-up Mausers and squaring up the barrels to the action and I wanna try him out and see what I get for the money. Skaggs gunsmithing is not too far down the road and his prices are slap-happy.

So what should I do with an 8mm? I'm thinkin sniper...maybe put some eagle feathers in the mix and beaded leather scabbard for it. Like This

Oh yeah I forgot, You mentioned a 35 and actually I was considering a 35 whelen too. Maybe a 20in bbl with 1in 14 twist? That would pop ya round a bit. Thank you FN for all the input on the Swedish. I really wasn't sure I wanted to go that way but sometimes when the price is right I just can't resist. Ok I don't know what the heck I want.............Is the nasty weather keeping you from your new 6.8 build? Maybe that's what I should do....go small rather than bigger. It's cheaper to load smaller too. Is 6.8 the newest hottest target cartridge? Actually that's what I do most anyway, target shooting. Ok I could build an 8mm target gun and use lighter bullets, now that's a thought.

Hey Suz, I used to have one of the m98 kimber rifles in 338 win and accurate as heck. I did have my gunsmith smooth up the rails for better chambering but was overall very pleased with this rifle. I think you got a good deal. I have since gave that rifle to my oldest son and I went with 340wby. Wished I would have bought another kimber 98 338win.

Hey Omni that guy on GunBroker has a ton of them from $150-200, you could build one for a few dollars, over time. I'm going to take a while just figuring out what I wanna do-do.

Suz, originally the .35 Whelen was designed with a 1 in 12" twist to stabilize the heavy bullets. New ones have a 1 in 16" twist. I wish mine had the faster twist, although it seems to shoot well with 200 grain bullets. I hope to try some 225 BTs this summer.

wow, now that you have a 98 that changes things a bit I like your .35 whelen idea but if you are starting out w a 98 you could do just about anything if you end up needing something give me a p.m. I have boxes of stuff I have taken off of 98's both commercial and military that you could get. I am assuming yours has a standard boltface. I have a couple of 7x57 barrels I took off Brazillian 1908's that would fit your "98 if you had a way of checking headspace. just about anything fits a 98 that I like but I usually stay away from a express length magnum, if you want a target cartridge either the 22-250, the .250-3000, or the 6mm Remington or .257 Roberts are ok for extended range sessions without wearing out your shoulder. the 2 cases originating on the savage cartridge work better when you use a short mag box but I got one of those off of a Chilean Steyr if you want also. Just let me know what you settle on I can probably help.

Ok I'm stickin with 8mm and I've looked over a few barrels on line and I'm perplexed a bit at the many choices. I'm lookin at a Douglas barrel #3 sporter, which is a medium sporter of 24 inches and 3 lbs. My thinking is that it is heavy enough to reduce some of the recoil and still be handleable (in length). Not real expensive (as barrels go), less expensive would suit me, but I can't find anything new in 8mm, that is less expensive. I looked at Pac Nor because they are here in Ore. but I'd add $100 to the price. Pac Nor also allows you more choices in twist rates but then again it's also more money (my bottom line).

I have an 8mm Mauser take-off barrel here but I don't have a clue about how it shoots. Looks good but it came off an old military action that I made a .270 out of. The gunsmith said it was a piece of poooie after he turned the humps off of it and left it full of debris. I took it home and cleaned the bore and it looks great. But what do I know?

Just to save some money, I could try it first. Don't want to screw up a new stock and then decide it won't do.....in a pizzel about it. Well actually I have a military Mauser stock that it might fit.....naw the barrel's been turned down on the take-off barrel...I'd probably have to bed it and I don't want to mess it up that way, it's a prize of a Mauser. Ok I'm thinkin out loud again...I'll have to sleep on it....don't even have the action yet!
