Howdy.When you guys have a rifle bedded do you just do the action or do you do the barrel as well. I have always just done the action with accu glass and then free floated the barrel it has worked well enough for me. I know pillar bedding is better but i never wanted to pay that much. I got a buddy that does it for me that owns a little shop and he charges me what the glass costs. I have had good luck with it and with good reloads have gotton most of my guns to shoot(moa) Smile

Hi Joe,
I think everyone has a different opinion how to bed and rifle, materials,recoil lug and barrels.
Basically, any rifle will shoot its best with a fully floated barrel if its bedded correctly. I do have a couple lightweight sporters that require a forend pressure point to calm'm down.

Recoil lugs are another item of debate, clearence all around or just the bottom. I've done it both ways and haven't seen any difference on paper. The only problem bedding them tight is if the sides of the lug are tapered, wider at the bottom the the top, makes it a SOB getting it apart!

I use two materials for bedding, Devcon and Pro-Bed 2000 and make my own pillars. Different actions require slightly different methods. A Rem gets bedded it entire length while the rear tang( rear screw back) on a Savage should have clearence.

One problem I think most make is pulling the action into the material with the screws. My feeling is the action must be in its natural state when the bedding is cures. I simply press the it into the bedding and let material cure for three days. When the screws are torqued, there generally is less than .005" deflection between the receiver ring and tang. If it works, here is a pic of a 700 VLS I rebedded before cleanup. If you look closely, you can see just a slight amount of material on top of the pillars.

Hello Joe,

Glass bedding the action is a job I prefer to leave to the pros. I did one myself but was not all that happy with the results. The gunsmith I use works mostly on benchrest guns and knows his business. It'll run me about $200. along with the barrel floating, but I've always felt it worth the money. In fact, my last three new rifles have went to him for this and trigger work before even firing at the range. I don't have much faith in the manufacturers anymore so send them all to the smith right away. Maybe it's a waste of money in some respects, but I want to get all the accuracy from a rifle I possibly can. I don't know, maybe it's a fetish, but it's what I do. Best wishes.
