I have a lot of shotguns of various types. For some reason, I really like bolt action shotguns as a backup or woods walking gun. There are so many showing up on the used gun racks of the gun shops that I visit that I may have to limit my visitations. True, some show signs of harsh treatment in a prior life. On the other hand, some are in NRA very good or excellent condition for very little money. Today I snapped up a J.C. Higgins 20 gauge bolt action in modified choke (made by Harrington & Richardson) for $49.00. I had the money and the gun had been marked down for quick sale. I hate it when that happens. Take care...

I hunted with a Mossberg 20 guage bolt action for my first shotgun. I never felt at a disadvantage as the action worked quickly for follow-up shots. I ended up sawing the barrel of to make a slug gun out of it with a red dot sight. Its a great deer gun and shoots 3-inch groups at 100 yards with foster slugs!

I received one of those old J.C. Higgins 20-gauges for Christmas in '62 and was my first shotgun of my very own. Mine had the adjustable choke and not only served me well, but taught all three of my kids the fundamentals of shotgun shooting. In later years I gave in to his story that he wanted to get back into hunting and loaned it to my brother...who promptly sold it for drinking money. Even at that, your post brings back many fond memories. Thanks for sharing and enjoy.

wtf wtf wtf

That is a downright horrible thing to do to a brother mate. I take it you "explained" the error of his ways to him. It is surprising how far a bit of "contact counselling" can go to let someone know that they have gone beyond the boundaries of "right" and common decency.

Apart from that, I remember the very first shotgun I ever had the use of was a 3 shot, 12g Winchester bolt action. Magnificent gun...don't know why I have never sourced one.

Joe,
I am going to follow you around some weekend when you visit your gun shops. All the best...
Gil
