Does anyone have a decent set of ballistics for 22LR. I am currently banging bunnies and magpies (a relative of crows) and would like to get a bit more range and accuracy. I'm using Winchester High Power but cannot find anything.

I often use the ballistic data they provide (mz velocity, sight range, trajectory), plug it into a ballistics calculator like Point Blank and then derive a ballistic coefficient for the bullet. Then I take the velocity of the bullet from my gun (obtain from a chronograph) and use that to get a decent set of ballistics.

Looks like you have two options. Pick a Winchester bullet that is close to the bullets you have and use its data ... or ... shoot a series of targets at 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards and develop your own ballistic data which will be more accurate since 22LR velocities very greatly depending on barrel length. I believe a 16 to 18 inch barrel gives you optimum velocity. I have a 22LR with a 24 inch barrel and the velocity is much less as proven by significantly more bullet drop at 75 and 100 yards.

Thank, slimjim - I never really thought about optimum barrel length for 22's - but that does make sense. Learned something today.

I wonder what the best barrel length would be for 22 "stinger" ammo. I'll have to try some tests if I can ever find some more of that ammo It's great stuff, but I've been looking for it for quite a while now.

It seems that I've read somewhere that 16 to 18 inches is the optimum length for a .22 LR barrel, velocity wise. If I can find that source I'll post it.

I did what Slim suggested, use the tables the manufacturer provided and plugged the number into PointBlank to make figure the BC.

Marlin (pre-microgroove pre-serial number) model 81 with 23 inch barrel
CCI Stingers AV 1558.6 fps
CCI Mini Mags AV 1160.0 fps

Winchester Model 290 with 20 inch barrel
CCI Stingers AV 1591.3 fps
CCI Mini Mags AV 1192.0 fps

Its interesting stuff. I did a school project with my youngest as to which was the most accurate ammo through my rifle and found that Winchester was the best but only just against PMC. The stinger ammo was the least accurate and the CCI Sub Sonics weren't much better. Thanks for the advice. Looks like I need to do more field testing......Ah well back to the range!

Let us know what your finding are. Especially if you have some CCI Mini Mags. They shoot the best [over all] in my .22 rifles.

I have used MiniMags more than any other 22 ammo. Pistol Match ammo is pricey and, in my area, very hard to find on the shelf. One interesting chrono result I found is that the older stuff in the orange boxes tends to fly a bit faster (80 to 120 fps) than the newer stuff, and with less deviation.

Lately, it also has been hard to find around here. (For the past 1 1/2 years) My daughters' pistols - a Walther P22 and a Browning Challenger II - run the MiniMag ammo flawlessly. Cheapo bulk 22 ammo sometimes doesn't have enough oomph to cycle reliably.


PS- I am in MA, so I can't order ammo online legally. This state is the second-worst for inane laws.

I keep meaning to put CCI Minimag HP's through the CZ across the Chrony but there's always something more pressing comes up.
One of these days I'll get it done......

If you want to see some terrible results, try "Thunderbolt" and "Cyclone" bulk .22's. They vary so much you have to weigh-sort them to use them for anything but noisemakers.

I have license classes that permit me to own the guns I own.
If you keep in you possession a gun, while at the same time do not have the correct license class to do so,
then yeah by law you are doing an illegal thing and liable to be prosecuted.
(tell that to those crims that went on shooting spree in Sydney lately)

Man, Gelan, those are harsh regulations. For a class C sporting/target license, to what does the medical physicians approval refer? Is it a letter saying you aren't mentally disturbed or depressed?

Did the dues for membership in shooting clubs increase dramatically when these rules were introduced?

That's what happened way back in the day when the License To Carry regs went into effect here in MA. Approval for the license was (and still is) up to each local town Chief Law Enforcement Officer. Pretty much all of them would refuse the application unless you belonged to a shooting club. Dues suddenly went up from an average of $50 / year to $500 / year or higher. Also, most CLEO's added a restriction to the license that it was approved for target use only. This meant it had to be kept in the home or carried only to and from the shooting club.

Things are much better now in MA. Most town CLEO's will approve a license if you don't have a criminal record, and it is "for all lawful purposes" which includes concealed carry for self defense.

Many states do not require a license at all, just that you have no criminal record.

Hopefully things will turn around for you guys down under. Keep the pressure on the idiot lawmakers. Educate the public.
