I just found google satelite mapping. Now I can see an overall airial view of where you all hunt so when a town or village is mentioned there is a reference point to work out from. My own area looks quite different from space.

Yup I've seen mine. Looks really different. Smile

For the most part Google Earth is pretty good but if you want "up close" pictures your out of luck. The area my mom lives in for example cant be zoomed in just to see your farm but it does allow for you to see yours and your naibours to make a rough guess at the whole area's deer movements. Very Happy

Depends on where you are, and if that local requires higher rez photos. My area is mapped in high detail. I can see small bushes around my yard, truck in the driveway etc etc. Pretty cool stuff. Luckily the major area I hunt is mapped down to the same detail. Going into 3d mode makes it amazing combined with the texture and topo information.

I can see field boundaries and woodland on mine but not farm buildings.but it's good to see where the deer go when they leave mine.

Google Earth is a Windows XP only program for up to date computers. My old machine will not run XP so for everyday use I use USAPhotoMap and TerraClient. Both are free programs that let you download the satelite map photo and the topo version that will overlay the photo. Very handy little programs.

If HD space isnt an issue, go into the GoogleEarth settings and increase your image cache to something alot bigger... it will keep more images around to make future browsing faster.

PS: Heres the mountain I live next to... you can see amazing detail in the entire region. 40 29 22.28 N 111 41 47.00 W

The problem with it on my machine is that I'm stretching the limitations of my system now. It's an old Win98 machine running 2000. I would love to run Google earth but it just won't make it on this machine.

Upgrading is cheaper than you might believe. I just went to pricewatch.com and looked up CPU / MB combos... look at this deal:

$110 - athlon xp 2600 333 cpu, fan

You need ram on top of that, at least 512MB of PC3200 ($40) but it would last you for a good many years. Or watch for a used scratch and dent Dell that would have a warrenty.

What's involved with a cpu switchout? I feel barely confident to add hard drives and CD/DVD drives.

Popgun,

If I understoud that that is a motherboard/CPU combo if the fan and CPU have been preinstalled like many are all you got to do is disconnect all the cables.

Unscrew the old MOBO (Motherboard) from the computer case and then screw in the new one and reconnect everything.

Then you got to put in all your old PCI cards and your graphics card into the new mobo.

And your pretty much done. Its not too hard to do and wont take too much time. Smile

Word of warning touch a metal pipe or something thats grounded before doing all this and during if your worried about static killing your computer. Smile

Google Earth is good but in most of the places I want to hunt high resolution image is not available. Check individule county web sites. Many of them have aerial photo programs using something called a GIS sistem. Often you have to look around within the county official web site. I have found them listed as GIS maps, county maps, tax maps and other places. Once you find them, they all work sort of the same way Google Earth does but two things make them really neat. You can identify the owner of the property and the boundrys. It also has a neet way to measure just by clicking on two points.

Here in MN well over half the counties have this and the quality and how old the photos are varies but in most cases it's good. MN also has a state version of the same thing but of course it lacks the ability to identify property boundrys and ownership.
