Rings....

El Kabong is eating the scope rings that came with the gun.

The cross-screw at the base won't stay tight, is stretched etc etc. They're alloy or pot metal junk and I'm tired of baby stitting them. I want something that won't shoot loose on this monster.

I measured from the bottom of the tube to the base of the ring and I get .40" thick approx. so I'm guessing these are high rings judging from the Burris site. I'm leaning towards some Burris steel weaver "high" rings and they spec at .390" so I'm in the ball park there and want a slim ring due to the long action and scope tube lentgh.

Any suggestions or preferances? I'm tired of shooting with an allen wrench on the bench squeaking the base cross-screw tight every other shot. (yes I loc-tited everything several days before the first shoot).

Maybe we're all supposed to know this but what kind of gun are you talking about?

More then likely one of his hand cannons, but your guess is as good as mine.

Wonder if he's tried using Loctite 222 on all thoses screws that don't want to stay tight. Of course I don't have any of those hand cannons...

cross-screw/clamp, bottom of scope rings, keeps shooting loose, cheap rings, need some that wont shoot loose, leaning towards Burris steel rings, coffes ready, good morning and grab a cup....

I also happen to be shooting a 300 Win. Mag. this summer. For my Encore and Contender rifles, I use Warne steel bases with their steel QD rings and have had zero problems with mounts or rings. The bases get low or medium strength Loctite; rings should need no Loctite. I have the Warne tool for setting torque on the screws so I can tighten them optimally.

I used that rifle with a Leupold Mark 4.5-14X scope to take this pesky raccoon at 270 yards; 1 mil high seems to work well at 250+ yard ranges as a couple other raccoons found out.

Got Burris Signature Zee's on 'Boomer'. Stuff stays put with them.

Them Warnes look nice too...might be a tad thick for my long action gap etc.

I have been using silicone sealant (bathtub caulking) for years in place of Loctite. It works great for any screws that tend to loosen from vibration. Use the acrid, nasty original formula stuff, not the new "water cleanup" caulking. Screws with silicone sealant applied can be easily removed. No worry about using the correct strength Loctite for the screw size.

Learned this from riding dirt bikes. The screws on my .300 WBY and Ruger .44 Mag have yet to loosen at all. These have both seen plenty of Max and Max Plus ammo. The .44 has seen about 1000 rounds / year since I bought it in 1994.

I've haven't used locktite or other adhesives on my base screws. I have had problems with some of them coming loose. I have Warne on my .270 which kicks pretty good with max loads because its a 6 pound rifle - no issues after a year and a half. I have 2 sets of Burris Tactical rings on my AR that have had no issue. I did buy some inexpensive extra-hi rings on ebay ($30) that would never stay tight on my AR. I felt they didn't have adequate bearing surface and would loosen even when torqued properly. I bought some really really cheap rings for $7 and they work just fine on my AR with hundreds of rounds down range in carbine matches.

A consideration with the Warne rings I have is if you want to take the scope off your rifle, the rings become loose on the scope body and its position in the rings change. Its not an issue if you aren't swapping scopes like I do on my AR.

Narrowed it down to Warne and Burris Sig Zee. Like the Warne's better but they might be too thick for my need. Gonna give the Sig Zee's a shake and see how they perform. I've been normally shooting 40-60 rounds a sitting so...lottsa booming. Only thing I'm not crazy about on the Zee's are the slot screws at the base. IF these fail, Warne gets a try but I'll have to set my scope back some and it'll be close with the long action/scope tube lentgh combo.

I avoid slotted screws when every I can. If possible, I replace with allen heads or torx usually bought at Ace Hardware or Brownells.

That's the way to do it Slim...was about to suggest exactly the same myself till I saw ya beat me too it. Great minds think alike mate.
