I got to speak with the supervisor at Burbank's airport security yesterday. Before I get into the details, the story actually started Tuesday when I left for my trip at DFW's airport security. I had just run my bags through the scanner at DFW when they asked who's bag was this. It was mine - what did I forget this time!?! You see, last year, I had forgotten to take some .38 rat-shot out of my backpack and got to fill out some forms. Security kept the 6-pack but was very nice and I went on my way in a few minutes. So when they asked to check my bag at the start of my trip, this incident flashed through my mind. What was it this time? Well, I had some empty .223 brass in my backpack. Security said no big deal, they needed to check to ensure none were loaded. I had all the primers out. I offered to take them back to the car but they said not to bother that empty brass was allowed. I expected this as I have also taken loose bullets through security with me. Last year when bullets were hard to come by, I would buy them where available while on travel.

So when I went through Burbank airport security coming home, I took the brass out of my backpack and placed in the trays so they wouldn't have to open and search through my backpack. They were in a clear one-quart plastic bag (3-1-1). Well, this caught a some attention. I got called to the side and the supervisor came over. She kept asking me what was I thinking, why would I do this? I told her I was just returning home and DFW had told me it was ok. She still shook her head saying I don't understand why you would do this and told me I would have to be escorted out of the secure area and check my bags. I told her that there wasn't time before my flight and asked if she could just dispose of the brass.

Maybe its just California.

It's not just California.

There was one guy who had to check a box of bullets as an extra bag.

I bought some lures in Norway and they were concerned about the sharp pointy hooks but finally let them through in my carryon bag.

You have to make allowance for people with tiny brains. I'm surprised they let you carry on empty brass; I think in many places they wouldn't allow this. I've even heard of rifle scopes not being let on in checked bags because they are a "gun part."

If you want smooth sailing, it's best to keep gun stuff out of your carryon as stupid as it sometimes is.

I use my backpack as an every day "take all with me" kind of bag. It goes with me every where I go. I should probably get two backpacks. Use one just for traveling that won't have "unneeded" items in it.

When you pay minimum wage with the idea of getting inteligent employees and end up with total dotes. What do you expect.

TSA has been having fun with their new toy. You know...The one that strips you naked (easy Suz). Well...I guess that during a training session with one of the machines and employee was a bit disgruntled because it revealed that he wasn't very well endowed and his work mates teased him about it. Seems he was arrested the next day for taking a baton to one of the offenders in the parking lot and made him neal before him and appologize...

Ya gotta just love it.........

See, that's just what she said would happen. Some one sees an empty brass case and the next thing you know they are seeing loaded bullets.

Try getting through airport security when there is a local TV news crew filming there...

And that was before 9/11. I had carried a canvas tool bag through there 10 times that year which I pointed out to the security people) but NOW it wasn't allowed. I had to get the pilot to come out and literally carry it 5' so I could pick it up and take it to the plane. By the way, it contained about $2000 worth of tools and was closed with Velcro and zippers so there was no way I was going to check it. When you're waiting for the plane to leave sometime watch the jokers loading the cargo. I've seen them deliberately throw expensive gun cases, etc. completely over the luggage cart and onto the concrete.

Yup and the airline company paid for having a very expensive gunsmith inspect and repair it and the scope...

It's really gotten bad, you know...I used to carry a Colt SAA and gun leather in an AWAL bag on the plane with me. All I had to do was tell the ticket counter and the stewardess that I had it. Other then "Did I have ammunition with it" there were no other questions. And this was from Hawaii to San Fran and back several times.

When I flew out to the US in January, there was some serious discussion as to whether or not my rangefinder was going to be allowed through in my carry on bag.
Once I said "OK, fetch my hold luggage back & I'll pack it" they decided it wasn't a problem.
I do however make a point of "sterilising" my carry on bag, as it's an Uncle Mike's range bag & used as such both here & in the US.
I HAVE recovered live rounds from the deeper recesses & under the base board in the past........

Flying out to Houston on the 17th, so I have a chance to do it all again.

No, there isn't more to the story. The guy bought a box of bullets for reloading at some show that he wanted to take in his carryon luggage. He either had no checked luggage or his luggage had already been checked. In any case, they made him take his pitiful little box of bullets out of his carryon bag and check it as luggage. He despaired of ever seeing it again but, viola, his lonely little box of bullets came out on the belt at the end of his journey.
