aloy, We aren't talking about .45 acp read the rest of the post. Hey suz yeah I use the bolt also. but since we are using a fired case from that gun it is really not an indication of headspace either, i.e. if it was excessive then the case now fills it perfectly anyway unless something went seriously wrong. Suz your method sounds perfectly acceptable either way. Especially after you added the comment that you may have to fiddle a little bit. I was just trying to keep the bullet off the lands during initial load work up as excessive pressure could result from a jam fit.

Hi Aloysius!!! Never seen you before, let me shake your........ hand! One of us is confused (I am fer sher) but we were talkin about seating the bullet so that it doesn't get jammed into the rifling, but rather has a very slight gap. Now when you say the cartridge headspaces on the case mouth, are you talking about the fact that the chamber is short throated? I always trim my cases to the same length and the measurement is to indicate the maximum overall length of the bulleted round so that the bullet doesn't engage the rifling. The Swiss 1911 rifle and Swiss K31 rifle (according to what I've read) have a different chamber or throat length. They are different model years of the same rifle using the same caliber round but if you load a 7.5mm round for one rifle it will not fit another because of the short throat, which will expose the bullet to the rifling. There are dies made especially for the K31 Redding and Lee make them. It's the same 7.5x55 round but with a different chambering. Maybe you know all this and I'm blowing hot air in your face, just wanna make sure we know what we're talkin about, sorry. When you say headspace on the casemouth or belt I'm lost......(I've never head of that I guess) unless you're talking about published data....which I don't have...it's mil. surplus, anyways....ummm nice to meetcha, please get back to me on this.

a .458 win headspaces on the belt. headspace is what stops the foward movement of the cartridge in the chamber. a .45acp headspaces on the little bit of brass that sticks out around the bullet at the case mouth.

FNuser !! yeah.......Well........... forget about the headspace thing, I was using the idea of proper space between the lands and the bullet and I haven't gotten much sleep lately and.... .......... Blah

So anyways if you used my rod measuring method and your spent cartridge-with-the-bullet-pushing-into-the-lands-method, you might be right-on the money even better as far as bullet seating goes.

Well yeah I guess if the cartridge is straight and no shoulder then it would have to headspace on the neck or the belt.......I should quit eating ice cream....brain freezes are lasting much longer than usual.

FNuser, sorry but when I hear an American talking about 1911, I don't think about a ringed straight-pull Swiss in a caliber almost identical on a .308 Win... so the K31's of 1911 shouldn't have been exported to the States, it's too confusing Smile

Just that I combined Suz's measurements and the 1911, which I translated as a Colt 45 ACP and I know in such a case it can be dangerous. When you adjust your bullet-seating-die on a long case so that the bullet would nearly touch the lands of the barrel. When afterwards a shorter case gets its bullet, the bullet will not enter as deep in the case and such a bullet can enter the lands of the barrel because a 45 ACP headspaces on the case-mouth. Which might create excessive pressure.

Suz, most straight cases headspace on the rim; .22 rimfire, revolver cartridges, .45-70, etc. (Just to add or confuse things a little more!)
