I use AA5744 almost exclusivly in my 1874 Sharps, It shoots GREAT Very Happy . the last time I went to the shooting range, I had loaded some Home cast lead 400gr(wheel weights) over AA5744. and hit a 12 inch dinger plate all 20 times at 400 yards. Very Happy
AA5744 works good in the old Blackpowder cases because it fills them better than the newer powder's.(load density)

Crackshot
I have heard some great things about AA5744. Like it is about as close to duplicating black powder loads without using black powder in the 45/70. I have loaded up several loads for my Sharps but have not tried them yet, waiting for my chrony to arive. I have also heard that it works well in 44 mag which I hope to try next week.
What weight bullets are you using in the 45/70 and what kind of loads?

Ken

I'll have to get my log books out, I've tried different ones, most shot very well.I'll go to the shop and get them out latter and get you some good loads(for my rifle).

I use mostly RL7 but IMR3031 works well also!
My elk load is 53.5 gr of RL7 with a Hornady 350 gr fn = 2147 fps - use with caution as this is a hot load - shoots 1 1/2" groups with my new 1886 win. 26" barrel - 1 shot kill at 235 yds - broke both front shoulders! just about breaks mine too! Crying or Very sad
Had to extend the lead .125 as could not seat bullets & crimp in the cannelure.

Cool It all depends on what you are looking for in loading the 45-70. If you are looking for a powder to mirror black powder in some cases AA5744 will fit the bill. For other loading there are many others to choose from, it all depends on how strong your firearm is, what pressure limit you are loading to and in some cases the barrel legnth is also a very large factor. I load for my 14" Contender so I have to stay within the pressure limits for the Contender (28,000 CUP) (45,000 PSI MAX) personally I keep the 45-70 below 40,000 PSI with large case heads. I have found that H322 gives me the most consistant velocity/pressure and also it is within my recoil tolerance. wtf I would much rather shoot my Contender with this round than shoot it in a light carbine or rifle. I currently use R-P Cases, Federal Primers and 50.0 - 52.0gr of H322 with a 300gr JHP or with hard cast 300 - 340gr bullets. They work very well and give me @1600fps. Cool

I load 56.8 grain of IMR 3031 behind 350 gr Hornady's in my 1895ss (22" BBL) Marlin and it groups very well with no signs of excessive pressure. Vel is just under 2100 fps. It drops deer like they were hit by the hammer of Thor. This is my Elk load but I have not been able to use it on Elk ( for several diff reasons) since I loaded it.
CAUTION !!!!!!!!!!!... This is MAX load in a Marlin so if anyone wants to duplicate it reduce load by at least 10% and work up............ !!!!!

RL7 is the only powder I have tried but am very pleased. For my 1895 Marlin I use 52 grains behind a 400 grain Speer flat nose @2060 FPS. Max load listed in Speer manual for modern lever actions.

I use 5744 powder in my Buffalo Classic easy on the shoulder my rifle has 1-20 twist and a 32" barrel, I am getting 2" groups at 100yds with peep sights, should shoot tighter with a scope. I am loading 370gr cast bullets by Penn Bullets with 29grs of 5744 and Fed 210 primers this keeps my PSI under 28,000psi. This past deer season I shoot through a doe at 120yds she walk about 10yds after being hit. Good shooting : Jim Cool

5744, under a 400 grain cast bullet. has worked very well for me in two Marlins. If I do my part I can get around 1.5" groups at 100 yds off the bench. I haven't chronoed them but they are easy on the shoulder. By the way, wouldn't cast bullet be easier on the Trapdoor than jacketed? When I load .45-70s I use cast bullets for the mild "factory level" loads usable in all guns and use jacketed bullet for my hotter "Marlin only" loads. Easy way to tell them apart.

I use 50gr of 3031 with 400gr Speer Flat Points for my 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun.
I have tried other powders and loads, but with my favorite powder 3031, my accuracy is much better than with the other powder.
Using the other powders, and if you want me to, I can check in my record book on the type of powder and loads, I get a pretty good "crack" on the recoil.
The 3031 is more of a "push" for recoil.

If it were me, I would stick with IMR 3031.

For my Marlin 1895 the only load I shoot for the 300 grain JHP is 60 grains of H4198. It's murder on deer. For cast bullet shooting MP5744 powder is tough to beat. Dave

My powders of choice are #7, Unique, H-4198, H-4227 and 2015 BR. But I use a good bit more powder than most because of the 98 Mausers. I use the 300 almost exclusively and run a few 525 RCBS bullets now and then (when CRS allows a foggy memory of the last time). Very Happy

I been using some H375 powder (60 gr) and 500 grain cast bullets in my buffalo classic getting about 1910fps average.. Really kicks hard but i think it will be an awesome stopper.
